April is set aside as County Government Month throughout the state of Texas. It is a time county government uses to ensure the cit-
izens it serves know what their tax dollars make available to them. In honor of this the county has put together some information
they hope will be useful. Each week in April they will provide information as to what county government actually does for its citizens
and where they can go when they need assistance. To start the month off, they are putting a face to their name and a name to the
office. From left are, front, Barbara Williams, county clerk; Mary Horton, treasurer; Larry Deyton, Pet. 4 commissioner; Sharon Mathis,
district clerk; Jack Marr, district judge; Cyndi Poulton, Pet. 2 constable; and Wayne Hunt, Pet. 2 commissioner; and back, Donna
Atzenhoffer, county tax assessor/collector; Bobby Bell, district attorney; Michelle Darilek, county auditor; Wayne Hunt, Pet. 1 com-
missioner; Dennis Simons, county judge; Andy Louderback, sheriff; Johnny Belicek, Pet. 2 commissioner; and Darren Stancik, Pet.

they had my heart and I was
in it 100 percent.”
Loewe said she is happy

many more entries to come.
She has heard much positive
feedback from individuals
about the tournament.
“Everyone that I’ve talked

Strangers, but
family first
• Continued from page 1A
Brown and Cox met Willis
and Willis’ wife, Betty and
daughter, Chris for the first
time. Brown and Cox also
brought other family mem-
bers, including Maudie
Halbardier from Pearland
and Brown’s wife Kay. The
house was filled with chat-
ter, laughter and busy traffic
flow. Children played in the
backyard on a bright and
blissful day.
The two families enjoyed
visiting with each other and
said they would keep in con-
tact with each other.
This is the first time Cox
has actually met relatives
she found on Ancestry.com.
Cox said she has been doing
research on Ancestry since
July 2012. She said there are
other sources that individu-
als can use for finding their
ancestry such as old docu-
ments, newspaper clippings,
other websites and journals.
“Plus, with grandparents
passing away and going
through their things and with
one of Betty’s aunts passing
away, that’s how they got a
bunch of these things,” she
said. “Then we all just start-
ed piecing it all together.”
Giles said his wife con-
firmed the relationship
between the two families
through DNA testing.
"DNA does not lie, it tells
you how you’re related,”
Giles said. “Someone wrote
me an e-mail a few days ago
and they said that I showed
up on their page as one of
their cousins and so I looked
at the page and I said ‘I
match, this person matches
and that person matches.
That says that ancestor came
from the same certain place
in North Carolina.’”
Betty Willis is the great-
great-granddaughter of the
Jaschkes. Brown is Betty
Willis’ third cousin.
There also was a family
tree on display. Cox said
when they met, they noticed
some resemblances.
Clara and her husband,
Frank Jaschke, came to
Texana in 1870, and then
moved to Edna when Texana
disappeared, Giles Willis
said. Giles is the husband of
Betty Willis. Betty’s grand-
parents are Joe and Agnes
Volkmer. Agnes is the
daughter of Frank and Anna
Tauber. Anna is the daughter
of the Jaschke’s.
Clara’s husband was a
shoemaker and their son also
was a shoemaker. The son,
Frank Jr., owned a shoe shop
in Edna. Frank Jr. made
boots that lasted 20 years,
according to his obituary
notice.
Cowboys would try and
trade him large tracts of land
for boots and Frank Jr.
would tell them no because
he had no use for land and
that he needed money. He
would spend much of his
money on liquor to ease the
pain coming from his back,
Brown said. He had a bad
back and severe pain for the
majority of his life. Brown
said he has had two surgeries
on his back so he under-
stands the severity of pain
that Frank Jr. went through
on his back. Brown also said
his dad, grandfather, son and
other members of his family
have back problems.
Betty said her grandpar-
ents started a bakery in
Edna. She remembered they
baked turkeys, pies and
cakes in an old fashioned
brick oven and there was a
candy stand in the front of
the store.
“They were very special
and giving,” she said.
Pets of the Week
There are some beautiful dogs to choose from at the Edna
City Pound this week. Arturo "Artie", left, is a 1 - 2 year old
male, German shepherd that is probably mixed with border
collie. He is both beautiful and well-behaved, and waiting for
a home. Rocky, right, is a 4 - 5 month old male mixed breed.
He is quite stocky and has a lot of loose skin, so we suspect
he will be a large dog. Also at the pound, but not pictured, is
Sarge, a special dog - he is a large white pit mix, probably
2-years old. He is super strong, so can be problematic to
walk on leash, but he is also super sweet and well-behaved.
We think he is house-trained, and someone taught him "sit"
and "down" - he is a giant wiggly mess, and needs a large
fenced yard to play in. He needs a home! Sissy is a lot like
Sarge, only she is like a midget-pit. She is brown with a
white chest and is very people-oriented. Zena is another
female pit mix, chocolate and white, she is happy with peo-
ple but needs to be the only family pet. Please call Animal
Control at 361-782-5271
