Once a ayhawker, always a ayhawker
By Lisa Shapiro

Being a Kansas girl, I’m
not nearly excited about
football as I am for basket-
ball. Once a Jayhawker,
always a Jayhawker. I was
born and raised in
McPherson, Kansas, which
is about an hour north of
Wichita and located in the
heart of Kansas.

‘On the Hill” in Lawrence,
Kan. With all its majesty
and glory, comes rich bas-
ketball roots and tradition. It
is where James Naismith,
the inventor of basketball
found the KU basketball
team and was a physical
education instructor there.
He coached Forest “Phog”
Allen the game of basket-
ball.
When you first step into
Allen Fieldhouse, your
heart beats wildly with
excitement and you can
smell victory. You find your
seat and your bedazzled by
the sight of a gigantic
Jay hawk painted on the
wood paneled floor. The
room becomes dark, music
blares, players run out into
the spotlight and the crowd
roars just before the action
begins.
The students rip up news-
paper and confetti flies in
the air when the KU scores
their first basket. My hus-
band and I love every
minute of it. We wave the
wheat, jump up and down
on our seats and do the
Rock Chalk chant. It’s the
only sport I really get excit-
ed about and I absolutely
love March Madness.
I had the golden opportu-
nity to go to the 2008
NCAA National
Championship in San
Antonio. It was a spur-of-
the-moment ordeal. My hus-
band purchased tickets to it
from some angry UCLA
fans just a couple of days
before the big game. UCLA
lost to Memphis in the Final
Four.
I had no idea we would go
to the championship game. I
thought it was a big deal just
to watch KU beat North
Carolina at Allen
Fieldhouse on the big screen
with hundreds of other fans.
I remember running up and
down the streets of
Lawrence screaming and
giving other fans high fives.
As we loaded up the car
for our trip to San Antonio
for the big game, I decorat-
ed our windows, placed
pom poms and Jayhawk
dolls on the dash board and
hung a flag out the window.
It was great seeing other
Jayhawk fans on the high-
way. Even then we were
saying “Rock Chalk
Jayhawk” to each other.
When it was the night of
the game, my adrenaline
was pumping and I couldn’t
wait to cheer on my team.
We sat next to a number of
Memphis fans at the game.
You could hear KU and
Memphis fans trash talk
each other. I didn’t start
trash talking until Mario
Chalmers scored that mirac-
ulous three-pointer. It was
such a clean shot that I
couldn’t even believe my
eyes when I noticed on the
screen that he had made it.
I remember leaping for
joy when we beat Memphis
75-68. Watching the team
and Bill Self holding up the
championship trophy made
my heart flutter and I smiled
gleefully as confetti fell on
the court. I remember hug-
ging my husband and
screaming out “We did it!”
On the way home, I
noticed K-State Extension
vehicles on the highway. I
Another successful
career day
Edna High School has
had two successful Career
Days because of the won-
derful people of our com-
munity that came to speak
to our students.
I would like to take this
opportunity to thank the fol-
lowing people for taking the
time out of their busy
schedules to come talk to
our students at EHS. From
the Jackson County
Extension Office: Jody
Price and Mike Hiller, from
LNRA: Pat Brzozowski,
figured what the heck, I’ll
boast about KUs big win in
front of them. I surprised
them by shouting out “KU
number one!” at them and
sped up in front of them. I
noticed one was trying to
catch up with me, but I was
too quick for them.
I blared Queen’s “We are
the Champion” on the radio
on the way back home. That
song couldn’t have came on
during a more appropriate
time.
Now K-State fans will
constantly remind me of
how good they are in foot-
ball. I can’t wait for KU to
play them in basketball
again because we usually
give them one heck of a
game.
I can’t wait to see what
KU can do this year during
March Madness. I wouldn’t
be surprised if you find me
at one of the regional games
or at a sports bar cheering
on the Jay hawks.
