LNRA will take over
operation of state park
By Lisa Shapiro
Staff Writer
Lavaca Navidad River
Authority will take over
operations at Lake Texana
State Park later this year.
Late last week Texas Parks
and Wildlife informed LNRA
that it would be terminating
the lease for the state park.
In a letter delivered to
LNRA on May 3, TPWD
cited the ongoing funding
shortfall brought about by
reduced state park funding
and last year’s record heat,
drought and wildfires, which
caused a drop in park visita-
tion and revenues across the
state.
“Continued operation of
Lake Texana State Park is no
longer feasible for TPWD
due to serious financial con-
straints to our state park sys-
tem,” said Texas State Parks
Director Brent Leisure. “We
are proud to have served as
the steward of this site for
more than three decades. The
Lavaca-Navidad River
Authority has been a valued
partner for many years and
we are comforted to know
they intend to carry on the
tradition of operating this
park with continued public
access for outdoor recre-
ation.”
TPWD has operated the
575-acre park under a 50-
year lease originally executed
in 1977 with the Bureau of
Reclamation/LNRA and
amended in 2003 with a
restated lease agreement with
LNRA. The state park, which
opened to the public in 1981,
provides public access to
10,000-acre Lake Texana that
provides fishing, boating and
other recreational opportuni-
ties for more than 40,000 vis-
itors each year.
In addition to owning the
state park property, LNRA
currently owns and operates
several recreation facilities
on Lake Texana, including

Council approves
city pool ramp
By Chris Lundstrom
General Manager
On the heels of new legisla-
tion requiring public pools
provide handicap access, the
Edna City Council members
decided to spend more for a
stainless steel ramp that will
serve more people.
At the May 4 meeting, City
Manager Ken Knight recom-
mended the nearly $9,000
ramp over less costly lifts cit-
ing fewer future maintenance
issues.
“The ramp would take one
lane from the lap lanes, but
older people might like to
walk into the pool using a
handrail,” Knight said. “I also
believe it would get more use
than a lift chair.”
The ramp would be perma-
nently installed in the pool and
has a non-slip fiberglass ramp
surface.
Council members also
added a chair for inside the
pool to the package. Knight
said a chair was not required,
but the council unanimously
concurred on the purchase.
“I’d hate to think there was a
child out there who would
think they were going to get to
go to the pool and then can’t
because the city was too con-
cerned about money to buy a
chair,” said Mayor Joe
Hermes.
“It’s a show of good citizen-
ship that we are willing to pro-
vide this for the public,” added
Council member Maxine
Price.
Knight noted that YMCA
requested the toddler splash
pool be modified to a splash
pad for safety reasons. No
decision was made on the
change.
In other business, council
approved the second and final
reading of Ordinance 2012-13
which establishes regulations
and development standards for
RV parks in the city.
Public works director Brad
Ryan told council the city was
spraying for mosquitoes late in
the evenings to minimize con-
tact with citizens.
