Pond Dams Erode
Without Cover On Slopes
Pond dams without cover tend
to erode on the front and back
slopes. Some dams rill to the ex-
tent that small gullies form and
some silt is washed into the pond.
A cover of grass is needed to pro-
tect these slopes and furnish some
grazing. K. R. bluestem furnishes
good cover and protection. Three
to five pounds of seed distributed
as uniformly as possible are recom-
mended. The entire dam (back, top,
front) to water line should have a
cover as soon as possible after con-

struction. Seed may be distributed
by hand on top of the ground.
Bermuda grass also gives good
protection. It may be sodded or (
seeded. Seeding should be done in
March or April. Sod pieces or roots
should be buried two to three
inches deep in moist soil two to
four feet apart. Use of barnyard
manure will help make the grass
grow.
Terraces were checked for com-
pletion for B. C. Colwick of Cran-
fills Gap.
Albert Spitzer of the Garners-
ville community shaped a water-
way. He plans to seed it to K. R.
bluestem. Terraces will be con-
structed to outlet into the water-
way when a good cover of grass is
established.
Ponds were checked for J. D.
Shields, Fairview community, R. L.
Sawyer, Iredell, and A. H. Moor-
man, Meridian.

clear by the number of youth, pictured above, who
recrived 4-H Achievement awards at the annual
Achievement Banquet held in Clifton November 18.
The citizenship of Cranfills Gap has long been
noted for the enthusiasm it puts into any effort
it tackles for the betterment of Its community. One
such effort that the 4-H adult leaders in Cranfills
Gap have gotten behind is the 4-H Club work for
their youth. The result of the teamwork between
adult leaders and the young folks has been out-
standing achievements in many fields by the youth.
