Hickman saw war ending
When Pfc. Dempsey Hickman of
Hortense wrote the following letter
home from Germany, he figured the
Germans' defense could last only
three more months, and he was
pretty close to right. The end for
the Germans came in April.
Dempsey had been overseas close
to two years at this time.
Dempsey was the son of NR.
Hickman, who had at least two
other sons in the military during
jhe war. Both Rufus and Val D.
lickman were in the navy, and
flufus was at Pearl Harbor when it
fvas bombed. Another Hickman
from Hortense, LeRoy Hickman,
was also in the Navy and served in
\he Pacific. They all got back home
pkay.

Dempsey's letter, below, ap-
peared in the Jan. 18,1945 issue of
the Polk County Enterprise:
Hope you all had a nice
Christmas. It was a white
Christmas here. Snow was about
four inches deep. German planes
tried to give us a little trouble
Christmas day but didn’t do a bit of
damage. There were several shot
down pretty close to me. I watched
one of our fighter planes send one
of them down in flames this morn-
ing.
You were asking me what army I
am in. I am in the 2nd Division of
the 1st Army. This division has
been on the front lines ever since
the invasion, except for a very few
Specials

Bank's Christmas Dollars Program
days. I am on duty 24 hours and off
24.
We have a couple of radios in
this battery. They play good up un-
til the war news comes on, then the
Germans drown out the stations
with short wave, but we get our
daily papers.
I have seen quite a few robot
bombs. The motor has such a roar-
ing sound if vibrates the ground.
They show up plain at night be-
cause of the flame of fire that
comes out of the rear end.
I think the war over here will be
over in three more months. They
are putting up the hardest battle
since the war started, but they can’t
push us back an inch.
