tt? It has been only a few days since atopy
of the Galvestofi Civilian of the 7th Doc
accidentally fell into our hands in winch is
republished Ex-President Jones' letter ads
- dressed to us of tlio lOth October and to
which the editor of thut paper bus appended
tho " Giiuvus Treaty1 and affects not to bo
uwaro of tho difl'crenco between that nnd the
proposed arrangement" with England and
France. As wo have since published the des
patch of Hon. Ashbel Smith to thu Secretary
of State defining that " arrangement11 we
deem any argument on the subject stiperllu
ous hoping that the Civilian1 " candor
will enable him (nawe feel peifeetly satisfied
his iniclligentt Will) after perusing thnt des-
patch to appreciate the very great difierence
there is between a Diplomatic Act" com-
tnhthig us effectually to an uuti annexation
policy for all time to come and an entangl-
ing alliance with England and France from
which wo cm! Id never escape nnd a simple
agreement to submit a proposition for iude-
pendonco lo the people of Texas nnd to let
them decide between that and annexation.
Tho Civilian" says that in tho terms
prescribed by Ex'.President Jorfn for the-
preliminary proposition of Mexico the con-
dition of the llio Grande as u boundary sine
qua non was nbundoned" For .this impor-
tant fact the editor of that paper is entitled to
nil tho merit of on original discovery" for
certainly uo one had ever dreamed of such a
thing before Tho first clause of that prop-
osition is in these terms :
41 Mexico consents to acknowledge tho In-
DEFCNOr.NCC or Tkxas."
The nine years war between Texas and
Mexico was always understood to bo upon the
question whether the Sabiuu or the Rio Gran-
de was the boundary of the latter Mexico in-
cUting upon the Sabine Texas upon thu llio
Grande mid when Mexico consetiled " to ac-
knowledge the independence of Texas" both
countries doubtless understood that the claim
of Texas was absented to and that 7f Mexi-
co surrendered. This is at least the pbiiu
uud aimph construction of the vviy plain and
simple hiiiHimgu u&ed ami wo think n unfor-
tunate thai any one in this country should
contend fur the contrary construction; for
there is j.isl at this time an exceedingly in-
terubtimririMto between this Slato and the'Ge-
iicr.l Government depending upon that fact.
The " Civilian" farther says that uwhaN
ever may havo been the agency of Gen. Hous-
ton in ucitcrifg'uiihexntimi he has never de-
el. nod hrndf the advocate u!' the mea.-ure so
f.ir as wn h ive heard or road." This we are
not prepared to dispato; but ihe " Civilian "
will donation) rucultrct that the General liu
written some two or three letters in reply to
Kx-Froideot Tvi it on the subJKct tuiida a
cwre.or two of btumphpeecliesaud published
(or some of his ardent admirers have for him)
u book of two or three hundred p.i'ii" with
the aimlut title of " Sttui Houston ij" Hw AV
j public;" and so tilroiig has been the delusion
produced by all those in Texas that he bus
in consequence been twice elected to the Se-
nate ofliiu United Slates without opposition
uud Mill possessed a surplus of political capi-
tal sultfcicut it appears in tin own estiiu.i-
tiou to ujIvooi'Il! Iiiio Ml b uleiing the interests
of Tex i tilt a credit id' four years and mak-
ing a bid for the Prefiduuuy of 1S52 by vot-
ing two or three timed directly or indirectly in
ttie lJ.ilumoro Convention and in the Senate
for the principle of the u ilmot Proviso"
uud once at least fur the Piovi-o it-elf and
thus maternally assisting in enabling Presi
dent Pout to give tt bis high official sanction
by signing a lull containing it in all its delbr
niity. lint we agree wiih the " Civilian" that
Geu. iloiislou has iintwiihstamlinir all (his il-
lusion really concealed his sentiments uhom
annexation from his friends" a well as eve-
ry body else and so vtry carefully has he hid
tliem away ihut we think the obi gentleman
cannot now find them .himbclf. Hut this is a
matter of little coiiseipienoe perhaps for the
fact of the mailer is annexation was a meas-
ure consummated by the udoiiuiMrntiou of
Anson Jo.nusj with which administration Gen.
Houston probably had as little connexion as
the remotest fisherman upon the chores of
Kamschatka and thereby illustrated a pru-
dence as great us that of the man in slop
who took lefuge in a tree when hi- friend and
feliuw-lruvoler was attacked by the bear and
whispered to him " never to trust a man u ho
would desert him in the hoar of danger."
Gen. Houston is an adroit tactician and the
position lie took in reference to the adminis-
tration of President Jonts was so cautious'y
chosen that it would euuble bis friends either
to disavow or chum the credit of the nets of
that administration as those acts might turn
out to be disastrous or fortunate. Certainly
lie gave no assistance to that administration
but did ruther " assist the storm" by which
it was so furiously assailed.

WllKN "DOCTOUS DISAGREE WHO
shall decide?" Dr. Moore of tho To.
lcraph denies that the cholera exists in
Houston whilst Dr. Somebody-else of
the Mercantile Advertiser says that it does
and that since his previous paper the dts
ease "had progressed slowly developing
the true characteristics of Asiatic Cholera."
&3- Wo copy tho following from the
Tribune of Matagorda :
"Tho Galveston News comes out with
tho announcement of Col. P. H. Hell as a
candidate to represent tho Western Con-
gressional District of this Stale. Now wc
happen to reside in tho glorious West and
very naturally feel a deep interest in all
things appertaining to its prospects so-
cially morally politically as in duty
bound : wo take tho papers" have studied
sotno little of her history are acquaint
ed with some of her prominent men have
rend the btograph of others but never
before have hud the good fortune to hear ol
Col. Bull. Wo presume many others to be
in a liker pedicument. If tho Colonel be
really serious in his aspirations to this
highly important position in tho political
arena nf our State would it not be well for
him to let those most deeply interested in
tho matter know .something concerning
himself and his claim to their suU'rage
through the proper medium of tho pressin
the West 1"
Wo regret that our townsman Col. Bell
is so unfortunate as to bo unknown to the
editor of the Tribune and perhaps to'.tho
dreaders of biography" uud those who have
studied ''some little" of our country's histo-
ry. There is however one class of Tex-
ians at least to which he is well known :
we mean those who were actors in the
events which constitute our history. Wc
arc not authorized to say that Col B. 1s
"serious in his aspirations to this highly
important station" but wo can with cer-
tainty say thot it is the earnest desire of
many of his friends that lie should permit
his name to be used in the coming Con-
gressional election.
As an evidence that Col. Bell is not en-
tirely unknown "in the glorious West" as
well as in o'.her parts of Texas the editor
of the Tribune is referred to tho highly
complimentary letter which we publish in
another column addressed to him in Sep-
tember last and signed by the commission-
ed officers of the Frontier Regiment which
the Colonel has commanded for something
near a year and a half past with credit to
himsell and honor to his country.
Fiiom Washington County. A cor-
respotulent writing from Lndepcndenec
U ushingion county informs us that the
first one of tho tcw steamers intended
lot the Brazos river arrived at Washing
ton on the 1st inst. and another was ex-
peeled to arrive the next day. Our cor-
respondent says that the people in that
region are inline spirits inconsequence
of fhe consummation of this long wish-ed-forentcrpriseand
ascribes great praise
lo the planters and merchants who have
by their perseverenee brought it about.
He says -'the different landings on the
river are ciouded with bales of cotton
ready for shipment and as the company
have made arrangements to insure the
freight on their boats at a libcial price
(22 cents on the bale valued at $30)
they will do a first rate business."
The same correspondent informs us
that a hostile meeting took place about
the last of December near the residence
of Mr. Wayne Barton in thai county
between two of the Burlesons nnd Mr.
Br.rton in which Mr. Barton was killed
and Edward Burleson severely though
it is supposed not mortally wounded. It
will'bo leoollagjLed'by many of our read-
ers that shme fine en months since u dif-
ficulty occurred at Bastrop between Mr.
Burton nnd Mr. John Burleson (a brother
of Edward) in which Burleson received
a moital wound. The mailer was legal-
ly investigated we believe and the evi-
dence going to prove that Burleson was
tho aggressor and that Barton acted on
the defensive he was acquitted. Since
that time a deadly hostility has subsisted
between the two families of Burleson and
Barton which has resulted as above
stated and which it is feared is but
the sad i( beginning of the end."
After the killing of Barton Edward
Burleson was conveyed lo tho neighbor-
hood of Bastrop in a carriage where be
wus concealed whence we learn by a
gentleman arrived in this city he was
pursued by the civil officers of Wash-
ington county ; but at last accounts his
retreat had not been discovered.
These bloody and disgraceful outrages
against the laws are rendered still more
horrible from the fuel that all the parties
concerned are intimately related by mar
riage Barton having been mrrried to
the sister of John Burleson and the latter
to the sister of Barton.
Suicide. The Victoria Advocate states
that Mr. James Ross (formerly of the firm
of Monod & lloss merchants at Port La-
vaca) committed suicide by hanging him-
self to his bed post ou tho night of tho 1st
inst. We knew Mr. Ross well mid we
can say with the Advocate that wc record
his melancholy end with fcehngs of sincere
regret. Mr. lloss has ever borne the char-

epidemic. Since the reception of the Pre-
siuoms message and accompanying docu-
tnctrs ull doubt seem to bo removed as to
the real existence of the precious metal
there in quantities beyond all previous dis-
covery ; numbers and numbers of enter-
prising young misers arc crowding all sail
for the favored laud. Largo shipments of
merchandise are en route i and being pur-
chased insomuch that tho good pcoplu of
that country will soon find themselves sup-
plied just for a few bags full of their gold
dust witli about forty" coats to each man
woman and child with pants in proportion
and about one barrel of flour and two of
pork to each and every individual per
diem. This you will think of course an
exageratcd picture but as they say about
the gold there " it is not half tho truth."
It is believed however that the foreign
emigration as well as from our own coim
try will be so great that the immense ship-
ments of merchandise will find a market.
It is believed that the Asiatic Cholera
has at length reached us and that there
are a number of cases at New York ; as
yet they seem to bo confined to the steer
uge passengers from the infected vessel
from Havre.

The Comptroller of the State has issued
the following circular to the landholders of
Texas a copy of which has been handed

Collector of Bexar county. Great difficul-
