the following facts nnd opinion? :

tional donation nnd subscriptions from
Do Wilt nnd Victoria counties wcio first
examined in connection with the position
of their county seats nnd nftcr a close
invest igntion of the benefits to be obtained
by the public nnd the company from the
selection of either route your committee
believe the upper or e astern lino of survey
and the crossing of the Guadalupe in (he
.vicinity of Clinton designated in Col.
Johnston's report of July Inst as (be most
dcsirchlc. This line presents induce-
ments not possessed by the lower or
western route in the amount of land
donated nnd ensh subscriptions to the
capital stock of the company conditioned
upon tho road crossing tho river in the
vicinity of Clinton; also the fuct that the
right of way from this city to the Guada-
lupe a distance of eighty-six mites has
with the exception of a few miles been
secured to the company. When to thcc
i md vantages are added the Hiving in the
ot'Of construction over uiuctv thousand
dollars (SU0.000.) See Col Johnston's
report nnd other inducements alluded to
in Report ofCommitteo on Terminus pub-
lished July IGih 18-52 the superiority of
the eastern over the lower or western line
of survey crossing near Victoria is evi-
dent and convincing to every intelligent
mind.
The proj o nlft from Tres Pnturios.

were severally examined (ee documents
numbered 3 4 5 fi 7 8 and U.) in con-
lU'Ctiouwith tho advantages real or sup
posed of the towns or town sites nlready
named nnd after protracted investigation
of the benefits present or future likely to
accrue to the company from the selection
of either of those places your committee
arrived at the conclusion that at or near
the settlement on iIib noitb-eusterii cud of
Matagorda or St. Joseph's Inland known
as Saluria the most suitable point for
the coast terminus. The greater depth
of water and superior advantages as a
sheltered harbor for vessels of every class
hi all seasons (see Col. Johnston's Mtpplu-
mental report marked C) give it claim
superior to all oilier points on Matagorda
Bav. and entitles it tobe con-sideied at
no dist lit day the. emporium of we tin

In connection with the great natural
advantages of Saluria as a seaport it-
position with reference to the oilier point-
on the bay by which a road running fiotu
it to Clinton could if desirable be so
constructed as to touch at Victoria La

weeks ago played n brilliant engagement j Audi iim jcdVr lt
at the St. CJmrles theatre in this city is Kluim.nw
dead. It is some years since wo have
seen Mr. Booth to such advantage as he
appeared upon Iris last engagement nnd
little iVid we think when we saw tho
curtain go down upon his lat effort here
amid the cheers of n delighted audience
that his piny of iifo was so nearly done
nnd that so soon lie would make his last
exit from the busy stage of life never
to appear again lie was a way-wurd
child of genius erring erratic and eccen-
tric now exciting our wonder nnd ad-
miration at the brilliancy of his talents
and then causing us to weep at the mag-
nitude of his follies. But the curtain has
has fallen on bis last act so let not a cen-
sorious world be too curious of Iris error
for "to err s human; to forgive divine.'

Florida IIcmp. Tho editor of the
Tallahassee Floridiau and Journal has
een some specimens of hemp grown on
Indian river from seed procured in Siat
Campcnehy. The hemp was grown on
Judge Hermans who gave the editor a
tempting description of the Indian river
country region of the .Stale but little
known in consequence of the presence
of the Indians. The ulitnute is delicious
tho thermometer never going higher
than DG and seldom reaching that point.
Frost is almost a stranger to the "oldet
inhabitant." and as n consenuenco the
tropical fruits flourish in perpetual fresh-
ness. The pine-apple the orange banana
lemon lime &i grow to perfection
yielding a bountiful crop. This beauti-
ful country is kept from being inhabited
except by a few fearless piotleers by Bow
legs and his marauding band who arc in
undisturbed possession of it "the lords
of all they survey."
O-We stated some lime since t Nit
tlio Hon. Volncy E. Howard would
not be a eauditatc for re-election. Such
wo understood were hi1 declarations
when canvassing the district previous to
the last election and such wu. our infor-
mation as to his purpose more recently
expressed. The lat San Antonio papers
however say that Mr. H. is in the hands
of his friend and if they dnMre it be
will again ben candidate. Although we
opposed the election of Air. Howard bis
course during the present Congress lias
given us great satisfaction and if he is
tho nominee of a convention of our party
fur reelection he -hall receive our cordial
support. State Gazette.
