From the Bastnp Advertister.
A dross Outrage.
On Saturday night Inst ilic negro
sohool-liouso in T. B. J. Hill's Prai-
rie 12 inile3 below Bastrop was
burned by unknown parties and on
Sunday uight the school toucher
Mr. G-.. V. Hanua was taken from
his room by a party repicsonting
thouiselvesas policemen aiitl brought
within two or three miles of Bastrop
stripped and severely whipped. Tho
circumstances convince us that it
was done by some floating or strag-
gling mob who have no interest
whatever in tho county. The vovy
fact that they went boldly forward
without any attempt at disguise is
convincing proof that it -could not
have been done by tho citizens of the
county. The parly represented that
ihey had come to carry him to Bas-
trop to give evidence in regard to
the burning of the school-house the
night before. Mr. Hanna called at
our office on Wednesday evening and
gave us the lettor below stating at
tho stime time that he did not w mt
this affair to be made political capi-
tal of nor did he wish the srood citi
zens of the county to suffer for tho
actions of a rowdy crowd that he
was satisfied the citizens who aro
identified and hold an interest here
are in no way implicated in tho dis-
graceful outrage nnd he felt it his
duty to cxhouorate them from all
blame. Here is his letter :
Bastrop May 31 1S71.
Editou JBastrop Advertiser- :
Dear Cir The undersigned would
beg leave most respectfully to state
for the information of yonr numer-
ous readers that the outrage perpe-
trated upon mo on the night of the
28th May was not and has not
been countenanced by the respecta-
ble portion of the community where
I reside viz: II ill's Praiiie or in
the county of Bastiop all ot whom
express themselves as being anxious
to briny; the offenders to instant nun-
islnnent and vindicate the laws of
tne btate.

On Monday evening the Slate
l?olico arrested a young man named
Sam "Williams charged as being our
of the parties engaged in the whip-
pin;' and on Tuesday he was tried
before Esquire Jungmichel- Capr.
Orgain and Judge McGiuuis for the
State and Col. Jones for the de-
fence. One negro man and woman testi-
fied that the prisoner was one' of the
party who canied Mr. II anna from
the house but neither Mr. H. or the
other witnesses could identify him as
the peison while the father mother
and sister testified positively that he
was at home the. two former giving
positive ev.idcuce of his being at
home from S to 12 o'clock. Mi If.
was carried from his room about half
after nine o'clock. W. was put un-
der 1000 bond.
There is .not a respectable citizen
in the county who is not anxious to
have this matter ferreted out and the
guilty severely punished and also
fully satisfied that no citizen holding
any interest whatever in the county
was at all irn plicated in -the alliiir.
Mr. Hanna himself says that . the
citizens of .the neighborhood have ex-
hibited no ill will toward h'irn but
on tho other hand havo ever treated
him in a respectful manner while
they desiro he should continue his
school guaranteeing him if neces-
sary their protection.
A mushroom will lift a paving-
stone many -times its own weiglit
rather than turn over and grow side-
ways which it would appear so much
easier for it to do. So tree-roots will
throw over immensely strong walls
against which 'they have grown
though ono would think tho pressuro
against tho softer soil would. give
room for their developemont.
