Local Residents Complete ‘Labor
Of Love’ For Mexia State School
CLIFTON — Some Clifton
women, under the leadership of
local resident Eva Edwards,
have recently completed a
“labor of love" that, with the
help of Interfirst Bank Clifton
and members of the Clifton
High School Future Homemak-
ers of America (FHA), will help
more than 200 residents at Mex-
ia State School.
The local women made a
handmade quilt which is cur-
rently on display at the bank. A
drawing will be held Dec. 15 at
the state school to give away the
quilt.
Proceeds will be used to
purhase three special "hot tubs”
for the state school's Martin
Unit. The unit’s 220 retarded

call for a permanent hot tub to
be installed on each of the build-
ing’s three enclosed patios at a
total cost of about $7,200.

Mexia State School was found-
ed in April, 1946, on the site of
a World War II prisoner of war
camp. It was the third residen
tial facility for the memtally
retarded in Texas and the first
to be opened outside of the
Austin area. It is now’ the second
largest such facility in the state.
Mexia State School is located
three and a half miles west of
Mexia on State Highway 171.
The school serves a fourteen
county area in Central Texas,
although many of its residents
come from elsewhere. This serv
ice district includes Bosque
Coryell, Ellis, Falls, Freestone
Hamilton, Leon, Limestone
McLennan, Mills, Hill, Hohn
son. Navarro and Robertson
Counties. A significant number
of residents come from counties
outside of the service district.
Mexia State School serves 149
residents from Dallas County
and 93 from Tarrant County, for
example.
The facility occupies 840
acres, with 215 currently in use.
There are 140 buildings includ
ing 33 dormitories, two quarter
way houses, a sheltered
workshop, a 56 bed infirmary, a
gymnasium, a special education
school, a canteen, two barber
shops, a cosmetology shop, a
clothing shop, a habilitation
programs building, a Volunteer
Services Center, an All Faith
Chapel, a Staff Development
Center, a central kitchen, a
laundry and other support and
maintenance facilities.

announced his affiliation with

Club met at noon Tuesday, Nov.
18, at the home of Mrs. J.C
Kincheloe. A traditional Thank-
giving Dinner of turkey and
dressing and all the trimmings
was served to 24 members and
one guest. Mrs. George Jackson.
Follow ing the delicious dinner
Mrs W.T. Thompson read a var-
iety of poems and selections
about remembering Thanksgiv-
ing. Some of these being both
serious and humorous.
Hostesses for this meeting
were Mrs. J.C. Kincheloe and
Mrs. Phil Gilliam.
Next meeting of the Magazine
Club will be Dec. 9, in the home
of Mrs. Phil Gilliam.
