Cubs Fall In Season Openers
CLIFTON - The varsity Cub
baseball squad is 0-2 after dropping
; their season openers, one at home
and one on the road. At Clifton on
Thursday, Feb. 26, Salado blanked
: the Cubs in six innings, 10-0. Zach
: Crawford took the loss from the
mound for Clifton.
“Zach threw a good first game,
giving up two runs in four innings.
' He struggled a little with his con-
. trol in the second inning when
Salado scored two runs off him,”
said Boys’ Head Coach Chip Head.
Salado carried that 2-0 lead into the
coach.
Last Saturday, the Cubs fell at
Robinson, 14-4, in a five-inning con-
test Rantz Pierce (0-1) was pitcher
of rectfrd for the varsity Cubs.
“Robinson is a very good ball
club, and we had four players step
out onto the field right off the bas-
ketball court. Give us a couple of
weeks of practice and we’ll improve
tremendously,” explained Coach
Head.
“Zach Crawford played a good
defensive game in right field, mak-
ing a fine running catch on a ball in
i top of the sixth, scoring eight un-
‘ answered runs.
“I was pleased with the play of
Bryan Grimland at third base and
Wes Lowrance at catcher. We did
some good things overall, but the
six inning just lolled us,” said the
the gap,” said the coach. Lowrance
rapped out a double, and Grimland
and Josh Prince had stolen bases.
“Our goal is to get better every
day, and be in top form come April
2 when district play starts,” con-
cluded Coach Head.

Meet now just a week away, a total
of 22 schools have announced their
intentions of comnpeting in the four
categories of the annual meet.
The meet is set for Saturday,
March 14, at Cub Stadium, and has

ready high in six-man-school
circles, and the additional divisions
will add to that excitement. Small-
town track coaches have praised
the Booster Club and its efforts dur-
ing the young history of the meet.
Booster Club spokesman Steve
Horstman said other schools will
likely be committing in the next
week or so. Schools committing to
attend include:
Sidney, Oglesby, Aquilla, Rich-
land Springs, Panther Creek,

“Our young men had an out-

LORENA — The varsity Ladv
Cubs finally got in the win column with
an 11-3 win to open the Lorena Tbur-
nament last weekend. Melissa Corby
(1-3) took the win from the mound.
“Being our first win of the season,
it gave us a boost of confidence. We
played good ball against McGregor.
Our pitching was much better, as well
as our offense. This was a great win
for us,” said Girls’ Head Coach Shel-
ley Sonntag.
Leading batters for the Lady Cubs
included Rita Cano (4 RBIs), Corby
(2 RBIs, double), Melony Johnson (1
RBI, double), and Meredith Yates (1
RBI, double). The Lady Cubs stole
seven bases in seven attempts.
Mindy Meinkowsky, Johnson, and
Kari Hall were leaders defensively.
Game two saw Moody edge Clifton,
5-4, despite a fourth-inning comeback
from the Lady Cubs. Corby (1-4) took
the loss for Clifton.
“Moody beat us 19-1 in our season
opener, so this 5-4 loss showed a lot
of improvement on our part. We came
out focused and ready to play ball,”
said Coach Sonntag. “We have one
more shot at Moody this Thursday at
Reicher. This should be a chance for
us to see what we are made of.”
WACO - The Clifton High School
junior varsity tennis team won 10 out
of 16 matches last Friday at the Char-
lie McCleary Tennis Center, Waco.
Clifton faced players from Troy,
Lorena, Gatesville, and Robinson.
“These were the first JV matches
we’ve had in quite a while, and it was
a very good effort from our players.
It’s good for them to play kids from
so many different teams that we don’t
normally get to play against,” said
CHS Tennis Coach Jack Gregory.
“I’m seeing a lot of improvement
from our beginners. I was especially
proud of Liz Wall. This is her first year
to play, and had to play against one of
Lorena’s varsity players and won!
“Erin Hoel has unproved a great
deal, and played a strong doubles
match with Wall. Courtney Hill and
Cody Sandahl had just one day of
practice after basketball was over,
and they both did good jobs under the
circumstances,” said the coach.
• Boys’ Doubles — Dean Williams/
J.D. Windham defeated TYoy, 4-6, de-
Chrissy Chaney (1 RBI, double)
and Amanda Watley (1 RBI, double)
led the batters, while the Lady Cubs
swiped five bases in as many at-
tempts. Defensive leaders included
Watley, Cano, Corby, and Chaney.
West bombarded Clifton in game
three, 13-0, in a game halted after 3(4
innings. Corby again absorbed the
loss (1-5) for Clifton.
“This game showed us what we
have to work for in district play. 1 per-
sonally feel we will stand ‘tuf’ in dis-
trict play if we work hard and keen
improving,” noted Coach Sonntag.
In the final game of the tourney for
the Laity Cubs, Riesel exploded in the
bottom of the fourth for 10 runs and a
13-3 win. Meinkowsky (0-2) was
pitcher of record for Clifton, whose
record stood at 1-7 after the defeat.
Hall (1 RBI, double) and Yates (1
RBI) led the Lady Cub batters, and
Becky Spitzer and Cano were top de-
fensive players in the game.
“This tournament was realty good
for the Lady Cubs. We played four
games, and did some good things.
“We are finally coming together as
a team. As long as we stay ‘tuf’ and
play as a team, we can be success-
fill,” concluded the coach.
fault; Steven Spooner/Sandahl lost to
Gatesville, 2-6,7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (4-7).
• Boys’ Singles — Williams lost to
TYoy, 1-6,2-6, and defeated Gatesville,
8-0; Windham lost to TYoy, 2-6,0-6, and
defeated Gatesville, 8-1; Spooner de-
feated Gatesville, 8-6; Sandahl defeated
Robinson, 8-3.
• Girls’ Doubles — Wall/Hoel de-
feated Robinson, 6-3,6-3; Abigail Par-
nell/Amanda Asher lost to Robinson, 0-6,
3-6, and lost to TYoy, 4-6,0-4; Stephanie
Corbitt/Hill lost to Robinson, 6-8.
• Girls’ Singles — Wall defeated
Lorena, 6-5; Hoel defeated Robinson,
8-4; Corbitt defeated Gatesville, 7-5,6-
3; Hill defeated Gatesville, 6-1,6-0.
“Liz Wall’s straight-set win over
the Lorena varsity player, and
Stephanie Corbitt coming off being
injured and winning her singles
match were highlights. Dean Will-
iams and J.D. Windham each had
good singles wins, and Steven
Spooner got his first singles’ victory
of the year. Amanda Asher and
Abigail Parnell are both improving in
their doubles’ play,” noted Gregory.
Feb. 25 Report: Water fairly clear to stained. 58°.
“Black bass and smallmouth bass are fair to
good, on deep-diving crank baits fished on outside
points, and on Carolina-rigged lizards. Striped bass
are fair, on live bait. White bass are good, on spin-
ners, live bait, and spoons. Crappie are fair to good,
on jigs and minnows fished in 15 to 35 feet of water.
Catfish are fair, on prepared baits.”
of youth sports who has been de-
scribed as “'the epitome of volun-
teerism.”
In addition to the meet that week-
end, also scheduled are Clifton
High School Cubs’ baseball and
Lady Cubs’ softball tournaments at
the Clifton Ball Park, so there will
be lots of action and the need for a
lot of help.
“It takes a lot of help to run a
track meet. Anyone interested in
volunteering can call me,” said
Horstman, who can be reached in
Clifton at (254) 675-4563.
