Life's
Tough
Greetings.
It is indeed a small world.
I was at the hospital last week
and picked up the January issue
of Texas Parks and Wildlife, or
maybe it was Texas Highways.
Anyway, it had something to do
with Texas.
A name immediately caught
my attention on the Letters to
the Editor page. I conjectured
that I had discovered a long-lost
relative, probably a black sheep
of the family, for, although the
name given on the letter was
mispelled, it was the same as
mine. The spelling of the name
as Embrey, rather than Embry,
led me to believe the person was
an expatriate and had forgotten
the correct way to spell it. My
suspicions were confirmed when
I read he was from Michigan.
I was curious about why this
suspected member of my family
tree was writing to the maga-
zine, and I soon discovered he
had been searching for me. The
letter did not actually say that,
but it did refer to a trip around
Evant, the town where I went to
school.
Why would a person drive
from Michigan to a town in cen-
tral Texas with one grocery
store and a population of under
500 unless he was looking for
someone? When I lived there, I
was the only person within 30
miles with the last name of Em-
bry, so I figure he must be look-
ing for me.
I continued to read the letter
and was somewhat surprised at
the writer’s excitement over see-
ing “some deer, a turkey and an
armadillo.” I say the guy was
lucky. A person can barely drive
around Evant without having
his car attacked by a deer or an
armadillo! If the experience in
Evant thrilled him, he should
drive toward Clifton and get
dive-bombed by buzzards. That
can sure get the adrenaline
pumping.
After thinking about this last
part of his letter I decided he
was no relative of mine.

Down On Minors In Possession Locally
CLIFTON - Clifton Police
Chief Rob Brennand said Mon-
day that several citations were
issued in Clifton during the
weekend by local police officers
and by officers with the Texas
Alcoholic Beverage Commission
involving minors in possession
of alcohol.
He said that both departments
also arrested two Mexican
males at the American Legion
Hall who were allegedly operat-
ing an “open bar.”
Brennand added that the
Commission will be back in
Clifton during various
weekends writing citations for
minors in possession. He said
that local officers will be doing
the same thing on a full-time ba-
sis, noting that adults providing
alcoholic beverages to minors
will be filed on in county court.
The police chief said that five
arrests were made during the
weekend, including two Mexi-
can males, ages 17 and 22, on
traffic violations; two Mexican
males, ages 42 and 26, for pub-
lic intoxication at the fair-
grounds; and one white male,
age 25, for disorderly conduct.
Brennand reported that all
had paid fines and were
released.
Local officers also investigat-
ed three traffic accidents during
the weekend, said Brennand,
two of these of minor nature and
a third of more major
proportions.
The major accident occurred
around 1:40 p.m. Saturday
when a car being towed appar-
ently fishtailed as it crossed the
twin bridges on Highway 219
East, said the chief. One wom-
an suffered minor injuries and
H.T. Nichols towed two vehicles.
Town Meeting Sept. 9
THE CLIFTON RECORD
675-3336—All Departments
CLIFTON — Concerned
citizens of Bosque County have
established a “town meeting” to
be held on Tuesday, Sept. 9, at
7 p.m., in the Clifton Civic
Center.
A spokesman for the con-
cerned citizens told The Record
that County Judge Regina Han-

twin
son will be present, along with
probably at least two county
commissioners to help answer
questions regarding county-
wide issues and to get opinions
from citizens as to just how their
tax money is spent.
Some of the subject matter ex-
pected to be aired includes:
• Expansion of the county
jail;
• Budget of the sheriff's
department and its coverage
duties;
• Maintenance on the county
courthouse;
• 220th Judicial District
Court operations;
• Plus other items brought
either by the public or by par-
ticipants in the program.
The spokesman said that
many issues affecting all resi-
dents of the county are in the
process of being altered due to
the state's forcing counties to
carry a heavier financial load,
while at the Marne time dumping
more responsibilities on them.
He said it is hoped that county
officials can get a better idea of
what citizens of Bosque County
want at this public meeting All
residents of Bosque County are
encouraged to attend
Ardell Williams and Mrs. Ar-
thur Willmann.
Hostesses Sept. 3 will be Mrs.
Thomas B. Moseley (chairman),
Mrs. Essie Green, Mrs. W.D.
Porter, Mrs. Loyd S. Swenson,
and Miss Elsie Pechal.
All members of the society are
urged to attend, and anyone
who would like to become a
member has an invitation to be
present and to join at that time.
Commissioners Vote To Purchase
Building In Downtown Meridian
MERIDIAN - In a Monday
Bosque County Commissioner’s
Court meeting, commissioners
voted unanimously to set into
action proceedings to purchase
a building in downtown Meridi
an to be used for additional
office space.
Owned by Larry Lawson, the
building located at 104 W Mor
gan (across the street from the
courthouse) is priced at $32,500.
Commissioners hope to make a
down payment from the perma
nent improvement fund, reim
bursing that money from the
general fund at a later time.
It is hoped that this badly
needed office space will delay
the need for construction of an
elevator in the courthouse. The
building will house the new In
digent Health Care office and
possibly other county offices
The court also voted to ap-
prove payment for the following
bills: $390 to Manly Court
Reporting for proceedings in
District Court; $8,000 to Patil
lo, Brown, & Hill for services
rendered in annual audit for
year ending Sept. 30, 1985;
$163.41 for Bosque County's 39
percent share to Comanche
County for service maintenance
on district probation depart-
ment typewriters; $500 to David
Christian for services in District
Court; John Hastings, $425, for
services in District Court.
The court voted to purchase a
nine inch by seven inch framed
print by artist Martin Grelle for
under $50 to be donated to the
County Judges and Commis-
sioners Association of Texas for
their Sesquicentennial
Celebration.

rin in last week’s Record, it was
reported that the City of Clifton

The figure was incorrect and

We’re Serious About
Power Line Safety
Power lines
are essential to deliver the
electric service that makes
possible most of the conve-
niences we take for granted.
Texas-New Mexico Power
Company takes great care to
construct each power line
safely, but these safety
measures alone can't prevent
accidents Here are some im-
portant rules to remember
about power lines.
When working around your
home or business, be certain
to avoid any contact with
power lines...always take extra
care when using ladders or
tree pruning equipment. When
at the lake, be sure to keep
sailboat masts away from
power lines. Overhead and
underground power lines are
constructed to be safe, but it
is up to you to treat them with
respect and avoid them at all
times Remember, electricity is
your safest power choice, but
contact with power lines can
result in serious shock. We're
here to help with information
about power line safety. Con-
