CLIFTON — On Saturday, March
5, 38 members of the Clifton High
School Band competed in the Region
University Interscholastic League
Solo and Ensemble Contest held at
McLennan Community College in
Waco. At the end of the day, 23 band
students had qualified for the U.I.L.
State Meet to be held in San Marcos
cn May 30.
Those qualified for the state meet
include: Natasha Cullum and Robyn
Wilcox, clarinet; Alinda Ficklin,
tenor saxophone, and Scott Payne,
French horn.
Other students who qualified are
stage band members Jimmy Bryant,
Kenny Buchalski, Margaret Butler,
Shiloh Childress, Natasha Cullum,
Alinda Ficklin, Gabriel Hall, Jake
Miller, Justin Miller, Chad Olson,
fcvin Paris, Scott Payne, Kevin
Pierce, Amber Potter, Wayne Reed,
Andy Rhodes, Kevin White, Kristy
White, and Jason Whitney.
“This is the sixth consecutive year
that our stage band has qualified for
the state meet,” said Don Thoede,
CHS band director. “I am really
proud of the kids. We practice only
an hour or so a week, and still
managed to qualify for the state
meet. That shows you how talented
our band students really are.”
“In marly schools around the state,
stage band class is held every day,
just dike any other class, and many
of those stage bands never qualify for
the state meet,” he said.

Students in the 11th and 12th
grades of Waco vicinity schools are
eligible to enter up to three works.
Entries in all media (painting,
drawing, ceramics, sculpture,
photography, craft, collage, design,
etc.) will be accepted. All two-
dimensional art must be on a rigid
surface, matted or framed, and ready
to hang.
Entries will be accepted from 8
a.m. to 5:30 p.m., in Roam 114 or
office B, in the MCC Fine Arts
Building.
The competition will be judged by
Paul Kemp, art professor at Baylor
University, and $175 in prize money
will be awarded at his discretion.
Works selected for the exhibition
will be displayed April 4 through
May 1 in the MCC Performing Arts
Center.
