Clark Wins At Houston Calf Scramble
Makes Third Scramble Win For Clifton Youth
THE CLIFTON RECORD, Wednesday, march 16,1994- Page 3B
HOUSTON — Brains, brawn, and
endurance paid off for Robert
William (RobbieI Clark of Clifton
during the Feb. 28 performance of
the 1994 Houston Livestock Show
and Rodeo.
Clark was one of 28 Texas youths
who was challenged to halter and
bring one of the 14 flee-footed calves
across the Astrodome floor into the
winners' square.
In exchange, he received a $1,000
calf purchase certificate donated by
National Flange and Fitting Co., to
be used toward the purchase of a
registered beef or dairy heifer.
Next year, he is expected to return
to the Houston Livestock Show and
Rodeo, armed with detailed records
and a well-groomed heifer to compete
in a special livestock show
competition for additional prize
money and awards.
Working along with Clark on this
project will be Chris L. Swearingin,
Clifton High School’s vocational
agricultural teacher, who will
oversee all work with the heifer.
According to Robert Norwood,
chairman of the Calf Scramble
Committee, the Houston Livestock
Show and Rodeo has put
approximately 13,000 animals worth
more than $3.5 million m the hands
of Texas youths.
The calf scramble offers a unique
opportunity to young men and
women who participate Each
contestant must demonstrate the
tenacity to catch and halter a calf, in
addition to having the desire to
dedicate the time and resources to
raising the heifer for at least one
year," noted Norwood.
In addition to the Houston win,
Clark has participated in and won
two other calf scrambles during
recent stock shows, including Waco’s
H.O.T. Fair and Rodeo, where he was
presented with a purchase certificate
valued at $350.
On Jan. 25, Clark participated in
a calf scramble at the Fort Worth
Stock Show at Will Rogers Coliseum,
and earned a $500 certificate for
successfully catching, haltering, and
leading a calf to the scramble judges.
He is a Clifton High School junior,
and the son of Robert and Iris Clark
of Clifton. He is a member of Clifton
FFA.

Stage Band A Soloists Advance To State
Participants in last week’s solo and ensemble contest competed by playing
either a class one, two, or three music piece, which was
rated by the judges with a division I, II, III, etc., with
division I being the best.
Any student that played a class one music piece, and
received a division I at the contest, advanced to the state
contest.
The Stage Band advanced to the state solo and
ensemble contest, as well as the following four soloists:
Natasha Cullum and Robyn Wilcox on clarinet; Alinda
Ficklin on tenor sax, and Scott Payne on French horn.
All of these students are now eagerly awaiting the state
contest in May.
“The brillant light of glory shines even brighter as we near the state
contest,” said our exceptional stage band drummer, Jake Miller.
We can’t thank Mrs. Rosalyn White, our accompanists, enough for
everything she’s.doing for us. She has worked hard with each soloist, and I
don’t see how we could do it without her! Thank you, Mrs. White!

Stopping Energy Loss From Windows Is A Breeze.
Windows are great when you can let a breeze cool your house,
but during months when you use your air conditioner or heater,
windows can reduce your home's energy efficiency
To prevent windows from wasting energy, make sure any cracks around the
window are caulked Heavy drapes that fit tight to the wall can also help
improve your home's efficiency Other options to consider are
thermal drapes, curtains and shutters and, for the summer,
solar screens installed on the outside of windows
For more information about saving energy,
