Cub Fish Fail
To Crawford
CLIFTON — The freshman
Cubs hosted Crawford Tuesday
and lost a 45-31 district decision.
Crawford is 5-0 after the win,
while Clifton drops to 1-4 in the
district and 10-10 on the season.
“The first and third quarters
cost us a victory,” said Coach
Andy Mills. “But we played as
hard as we have all season in the
second and fourth quarters ”
Clifton was out-scored 7-1 in the
first period and 13-2 in the third
stanza.
“J.T. Scaff continues to im
prove his game. He has become
more aggressive on both ends of
the floor,” Coach Mills noted
Scaff led in scoring with 11 points
and in rebounds with seven.
WHITNEY — The Clifton Cub
8th-Grade “B-Team” lost a pair of
games last Saturday at the Whit-
ney Tournament, start;ng with a
defeat by their hosts, 35-16.
“Limited to only two post play-
ers, the Cubs played exceptionally
well,” Coach Mitch Williams re-
ported. “But we let them get too
far away from us in the first and
third quarter, and we were unable
to overcome the deficit.”
Wes Benfer topped Clifton’s
scorers with seven points, fol-
lowed by Nate Atkins (4), Derek
Bright (3), and Mario Villalpando
(2). Benfer and Camp Peterson
played the entire game.

SPORTS EDITOR
CLIFTON — It took an extra
four minutes, but the District 10-
AA first-place Crawford Pirates
handed the varsity Cubs a 47-46
defeat at Clifton High School Tues-
day night. The rafters rattled in
the high school gym as the crowd
got louder and louder as the game
wore on. It looked as if the Pirates
would run away with the game
early, leading by seven at the end
of one period and by eight going
into the intermission. Crawford
led by as many as 16 midway
through the second quarter.
But the Cubs fought back in the
second half, sending the match
into overtime. The Pirates, how-
ever, prevailed 5-4 in the extra pe-
riod to take the win and improve
to 6-1 in district play, virtually lock-
ing up a playoff slot. Clifton's post-
season is still cloudy as they drop
into a three-way tie for third place
at 3-4 with Hamilton and Hieo.
“Defensively, I could not be more
proud of my team. Offensively, we
went almost five minutes in the
second quarter without scoring
until Kyle Schulze broke the ice
with two free-throws,” Boys’ Head
Coach Brady Gage said.
Neither team could consistently
find the basket early on, but Craw-
ford opened up the door twice, go-
ing from a 4-4 tie to a 9-4 lead, then
closing out the first quarter going
5-of-6 from the line after Chris
Finney ripped a three-pointer for
Clifton from the top-side.
Crawford continued its run into
the second quarter, pushing the
lead to 23-9 before the Cubs found
the scoreboard again on a pair of
free-throws by Kyle Schulze.
Finney then scored underneath
and drew a foul, hitting the free
shot as well.
Chris Lemmons ripped a
jumper in the lane, then Kendall
Kleine made an awesome save on
a ball headed out-of-bounds, fling-
ing the ball to Lemmons who
dished to Brandon Crawford un
derneath for the bucket. Crawford
closed the period with l-of-2 from
the line, but Clifton had cut their
lead to 24-16 by the buzzer.
Crawford opened the third with
a three-pointer, but Alec Scaff hit
a pair from the line. Crawford re-
taliated with another three, then
a free-throw, but Lemmons re-
sponded with a 14-foot jumper, and
Scaff spun to the basket for two
and a foul .hitting the extra shot.
Lemmons busted through the
lane for a basket and also drew a
foul, sinking the charity shot, then
Scaff scored from down under.
Crawford hit l-of-2 from the line to
end the period, but the Cubs had
pulled within four points.
Opening the final period of regu-
lation, Lemmons nailed a jumper,
then swished a shot just inside the
three-point arch to tie the game.
Crawford scored inside, but Scaff
rebounded and scored, drawing a
foul. His free-throw put Clifton on
top for the first time in the game,
leading 35-34.
Finney hit two foul shots, but
Crawford did the same, then hit a
tap-in on a missed free-throw to
regain the lead, 38-37. Finney
fouled out with 1:51 left in the
fourth, and Crawford hit another
free-throw to lead by two.
“The rest of the team has
stepped up the intensity as
well,” the coach added.
Others scoring includes Mitch
Nichols (7), Kyle Fields (3), Neil
Payne (2), Chris Asikis (2), Ben
Jackson (2), Tony Allen (2), and
Haden Outlaw (2). Other re-
bounds came from Eric Canute-
son (3), Nichols (3), Fields (2).
and Jackson (1).
“I’m, proud of our effort. I just
wish we could have put together
four quarters on the offensive
end,” Coach Mills concluded.
“We went to a full-court, man-to-
man press in the fourth quarter,
and our kids did a really good job,”
Coach Ward added.
Clifton followed with a 25-5 loss
to the Lorena Leopards. Scott Vra-
zel and Phillip Ramirez had two
points each, and Will Murdoch
added a free-throw.
“We were tired, and had a hard
time with their full-court zone
press. Our fatigue after a hard first
game affected the fundamentals of
basketball,” Coach Ward said.

from the line. Lemmons then hit
another long two-pointer from the
right, tying the game with 22 sec-

After a Pirate time out to plan
their last shot, Crawford brought
the ball up the floor, but heavy de-
fensive pressure from Lemmons
caused a turnover with 10 seconds
on the clock, sending the game
into overtime.
“Lemmons took over in the
fourth quarter and used his quick-
ness to get the ball in the hole,
scoring eight of his 12 points in the
fourth.” Coach Gage said.
Defensive pressure on both
sides dominated the extra four
minutes of play. Kleine drove the
baseline for a bucket to put the
Cubs up by two, but the Pirates
came back to hit a three-pointer.
Kleine fouled out with 1:53 left in
the in the extra stanza, and Craw-
ford converted both shots to go up
47-46.
Scaff scored late on a spin move
inside to cut the lead back to one,
and Crawford missed a pair of
free-throws, giving Clifton one last
chance with 15 seconds left, but
several chances down low failed to
find the mark, and the Pirates held
on for the one-point victory.
“Scaff, giving up six inches to
Adam Fbller, held him in check all
night, allowing only two baskets
while putting 14 through on the
offensive end,” Coach Gage said.
“We also got solid play off the
bench from Forson, Schulze, and
Crawford, who all contributed to a
great effort."
