Lady Cub Junior Varsity On A Roll
CLIFTON — The junior varsity
Lady Cubs won four matches in a
five-day span which included a
tournament championship at
home and a district-opening vic-
tory as well The wins put the Lady
Cubs’ season record at 12-3.
Clifton opened the latest winning
string at home with a 15-1,15-8 vic-
tory over Italy on Friday, Sept. 20.
“We did a good job running a 5-1
offense,” said Coach Linda
Brigham “We kept a lot of pres-
sure on Italy with tough serving,”
she said. That serving included 15

gaaie We executed, we were
physical, we came off the hall,

plained
He said the coaches had dis
cussed hew they felt bad about
putting that many points oa the
board against another team, es
penally one in the immediate
area, but at the same time, it
was unintentional to some ex
tent
“We didn’t throw the ball in
the second half After the first
series in the second half, the
first offense was never back out
there They knew we were go-
ing to run it right at them, and
no matter who we put out there,
we just kept being successful.
It’s just a weird deal,” Barnett
continued.
Again, the Cubs were rela-
tively penalty-free for the sec-
ond week in a row Having just
34 yards in penalties when you
have 12 possessions on the
night is minuscule, especially in
a 70-13 rout. Things can tend to
get sloppy in the latter stages of
a blowout, but the Cubs did not
let that happen to them
Clifton put about 550 yards of
offense into the books, and Bar
nett gave a lot of the credit to
the offensive line. Not only are
they blocking, but blocking very
well and very effectively, creat-
ing holes and lanes for the of-
fense to cruise through.
Special teams again were a
strong point for the Cubs Friday
at Bosqueville. Brown was 10
of-10 on extra-point kicks —
“That just doesn’t happen. No
one expects to score 10 touch-
downs. He’s kicking the ball re-
ally well,” Coach Barnett
explained.
“Romney Luna is kicking the

ball off well, and Finney is a great
punter — although he didn’t get
the opportunity last night. Things
are really coming around in our
kicking game, and just like every-
thing else, we’re making a lot of
steady progress.
One of the best things about
Friday’s game was the amount
of kids who not only got to suit
up but got to see quite a bit of
playing time.
“We got an opportunity to
play a lot of kids who come to
practice every day, they work
hard, and a lot of times they’re
on our scout teams, and when
they get a chance to play, they
get after it. It’s really good to
get those kids in there and let
them play a significant amount
of time. We were able to do that,
and they took advantage of it
and made some plays,” Coach
Barnett concluded.
With Homecoming this week in
Clifton, the Cubs now prepare for
the 2-2 Troy Trojans who invade
Cub Stadium this Friday Kickoff
is set for 7:30 p.m., and a preview
of that match-up will appear in
Friday’s sports section.
Freshman Cubs Rattle Reicher, 35-20
CLIFTON - The 9th-Grade
Cubs improved to 2-0 on the sea-
son and dropped Reicher’s fresh
men to 2-3 with their 35-20 victory
at Reicher last Thursday evening.
“The offensive line was really
opening some holes for the backs
and controlled the line of scrim-
mage extremely well,” said Coach
Andy Mills. “Mitch Nichols had a
great night, saw the field well, and
was constantly working to get the
extra yards.”
“The defensive had a few break-
downs but played extremely well,”
said Coach Mitch Williams “A goal-
line stand in the second quarter
was a big lift for our defense going
into the half. That type of effort
sparked out intensity level going
into the second half,” he noted.
Reicher scored first in the first
quarter on a 35-yard run, then
passed for the conversion to go up
8-0 with 2:18 left in the quarter.
The Cubs tied the game with 8:20
left in the second when Nichols scored
on a 14-yard sweep around the left
side, then ran in the conversion
“Reicher threatened to score on
their next possession, making it
down to the 6-yard-line, but Eric
Canuteson knocked the ball loose
on a run and Bentley Metcalfe re-
covered the fumble,” reported
Coach Brady Gage.
On their first play from scrim-
mage in the thini the Cub fresh-
men took the lead, 14-8, when
Nichols scored on a 48-yard rush-
ing TD. Later that period, Haden
Outlaw scored from 18 yards out
on a counter play to the left, and
Nichols ran in the two-pointer as
Clifton built a 22-8 advantage.
With a half-minute remaining in
the third, Nichols went 57 yards on
a lead, and Kyle Fields kicked the
extra point.
Reicher cut the Cubs’ advantage
to 29-14 on a 59-yard pass play
early in the fourth, but on
Reicher’s next possession, Vinnie
Jones intercepted a pass in the
flats and returned in 67 yards for
a touchdown as the Cubs
stretched their lead to 35-14.
On the ensuing kickoff,
Reicher’s deep man took the ball
back 80 yards for a TD, but the
extra point attempt foiled. Clifton
got the ball back with 1:21 left and
ran out the clock on the 35-20 Cub
victory.
