Extension Expands Viticulture Team
MORE THAN HE CAN HANDLE? — ROGER MITCHELL at least
temporarily traded his Harley for a Moped as a tested an auc-
tion item for last weekend's annual Hearts and BARKs Valen-
tine Gala fund-raiser.
LUBBOCK — Texas Coop-
erative Extension continues to
expand its statewide viticulture
program with the addition of
tour regional viticulture asso-
ciates. The associates serve
four distinct regions: West
Texas, North Texas, Hill
County, and Gulf Coast. They
work under the direction of Dr.
Ed Heilman, Extension
viticulture specialist at Lub-
bock, and Jim Kamas, Exten-
sion fruit specialist at
Fredericksburg.
The goal of the team is to im-
prove wine grape production
practices that will enhance the
economic impact of the grape and
wine industry. Identifying and re-
fining production practices that fit
the range of Texas soils and di-
mate should help growers attain
more consistent yields and higher
quality fruit more efficiently and at
a lower cost
The four new associates will
help provide statewide delivery
of Extension viticulture educa-
tion programs and assist Texas
growers.
Bosque County is served by
Fran Pontasch, the North
Texas-area associate, who is
stationed in Stephenville at the
Texas A&M University System
Agricultural Research and Ex-
tension Center. Pontasch can
be reached at (254) 968-4144 or

forts.
The evening opened with a
reception and light refresh-
ments as patrons viewed and
placed bids on more than four
dozen packages, many follow-
ing the BARK’s gala themes of
pets and Valentine’s Day.
Bidding continued in the si-
lent action as those in atten-
dance were seated in the Tin
Building Theatre for a catered
meal, with mood music pro-
vided by the Sonny Mac Blues
Band. Several patrons inter-
rupted their dining to glide
across the dance floor, while
others hit the floor following
dessert.
The live auction followed
the dinner, with a variety of
items up for grabs, including
a trio of bronzed Labrador
statuettes, a wine-and-dinner
for eight, a gas-powered
Moped, a framed George Hall-
mark print, a “Jumbo Gumbo”
dinner, a Colorado vacation
package, and an elegant
wooden bench.
The evening concluded as
Sonny Mac and his musicians
played a string of favorite
blues, jazz, and Motown tunes
to the dancing delight of those
attending.
BARK’s mission is to pro-
vide a temporary and safe
shelter for lost, unwanted,
abandoned, or mistreated
pets in the county. Owners are
sought to reunite them with
their lost animals, while oth-
ers will be treated for illnesses
and offered for safe adoption.
Another of BARK’s focuses is
to spay and neuter in order to
reduce the stray and un-
wanted pet population.
A non-profit organization
with 501 (c)3 status, it is run by
volunteers, so there is no over-
head. One-hundred-percent of
donations and funds raised go
directly to animal aid in
Bosque County.
