CLIFTON —Keith Zuehlke, who has served as
the middle school band director since 1997, took
over the reins of the high school band program this
summer after the departure of former Band Direc-
tor Bryan Ferrell Zuehlke is fielding some 86 band
students this year as practices have been under
way for several weeks in preparation for their first
marching performance on Friday, Sept 6. at Cub
Stadium
Zuehlke is a true “"homegrown" product, attend-
ing Clifton schools from kindergarten through his
senior year in high school, graduating in 1990 The
school system's band program was just beginning
to gather steam when Zuehlke’s fifth grade class
started playing the plastic flute a phones in the fall.
“I started with elementary music at Clifton El-
ementary School, went to the middle school, and
now I get to try my hand at high school,” Zuehlke
told The Clifton Record in an interview this sum-
mer.
While he hopes to put his own signature on the
band, he said he has three very different persons as
his major influences in his musical career —
former CHS Band Directors Larry Snyder, Don
Thoede, and Ferrell.
“Larry was a big influence, partly because of the
tragedy that went with his life He was a great band
director, was young, all the kids really liked him,
and then he died at such a young age. That made a
lasting impression on a lot of students, me included.
He was like an icon,” Zuehlke explained.
“Don came in and helped guide us He really en-
