SHS Clocks
Really Keep
Time
Anyone who claims that, at
school, “Time Stands still’-
should pay a visit to Silsbee
Our clock population is making
such a good time that a few
amused students are wondering
if there, might be mice in the
clockworks. Indeed, clock hands
here are spinning in a true
“Hickory - dickory - dock fash-
ion.
Two neighboring timekeep
ers, Cafeteria Clock and Corri-
dor A Clock, are real show-
offs. Corridor Clock began the
school year an hour late and
continued to lag behind for al-
most two months. After a sud-
den about-face in personality,
it picked up speed. Now it per-
forms at an hour per minute
rate—60 times normal time.
Corridor Clock also boasts a
built-in sense of rhythm. This
talent was discovered when
SHS acquired a jukebox and
Corridor Clock could tick to
the beat of rock-and-roll.
Cafeteria' Clock clamors for
attention, loo. It matches time
with its rival outside the cafe-
teria door, perhaps with the
mischievous intention of frigh-
tening slow diners.
Seven Are To
Attend French
High Tourney
Seven Silsbee High School
drama and forensics students
will attend the annual French
High Invitational Speech Tour-
nament at French High School,
Oct. 13 and 14. The Silsbee
group competes nearly every
year at French High’s “Tourna-
ment of Oranges.”
Entering poetry interpreta-
tion are Senior Connie Gilder
and Sophomore Maurine Den-
son. Connie has chosen as her
selection, "To a Contemporary
Bunkshooter,” by Carl Sand-
burg. Maurine will read a se-
lection from “Leaves of Grass,"
by Walt Whitman.
Maurine is also performing a
duet acting scene with Duane
Thompson, a Senior. They will
present a portion of “The Fan-
tastiks" by Tom Jones and
Harvey Schmidt.
Joanna Evans, a Senior also,
is in the extemporaneous infor-
mative speaking category. She
will enter prose interpretation,
reading “The Waltz,” by Doro-
thy Parker. Joanna will also
enact a duet with Sophomore
Mary Hartley. The girls have se-
lected “A Streetcar Named De-
sire,” by Tennessee Williams.
Using the same selection as her
duct scene, Mary will also com-
pete in prose interpretation.
Two more Silsbee High stu-
i dents, Charlene Free and Paula
Taylor, will be traveling with
the group to observe debate.
They will not begin competing
until a later date.
Mr. James R. Meldrum, UIL
Speech instructor, has had his
small troupe of performers
practicing daily for several
weeks in preparation for this
tournament. He says that a
good showing for Silsbee High
is anticipated.

describe the Silsbee Tigers ! ! !
Only a team such as this can
come on strong from a Home-
coming tie and be victorious in
the next game. A score of 24-7
is splendid; just like the Tigers!

Tigerettes Sell
"Football Players’
Would you believe that you
can now buy a football player
for oiily 50 cents? Well, you
really can! However, the player
is plastic, about six inches
high, and is worn on jackets
or shirts. Those are the breaks,
but these pins are emblematic
of their owner’s support for the
Silsbee Tigers. The purchase
also helps the SHS Tigerettes
in the money-making game.
The Tigerettes are selling
these “men” as one of their
fund raising projects. The pro-
fits from these sales will buy-
new pompoms for the girls.
Hopefully, whenever students
find that “extra” half dollar in
their purses or pockets, they
will buy a little “man” from a
Tigerette. Not only will the
Tigerettes appreciate it, but
the Tiger team will know that
one more person is behind them
all the way.
offensive line, including center
Dock Mullins, guards Keith
Van Winkle and Kevin Bendy,
and tackles Paul Sweat and
Sparky Gore, powered great
blocks for the backs.
Doug Almond highlighted the
game by scoring three touch-
downs. His first score was a
94 yard run in the second quar-
ter. Paul Sweatt kicked the ex-
tra point. In the third quarter
Nelson Long scored on a quar-
terback keeper around left end
for the second Tiger touch-
down. Sweatt again added the
extra point. Then Alrqond scor-
ed twice in the third quarter on
runs of 26 and 89 yards, respec-
tively. Sweatt added the extra
points for both touchdowns.
Liberty’s only score came in
the third quarter when Siaz
scored on a kickoff return. Lib-
erty tried tor two points after
the touchdown only to be stop-
ped by a tackle from Doby
Dear,
Final score for the Tigers
came in the fourth quarter
when Leonard Atkins made a
TD from 40 yards out. Sweatt’s
try for the extra point was
blocked by Liberty.
Sharp Tiger defense was
shown by Doby Dear, Mark
Muckleroy, Harry Gardner,
Cary Smith and Leon Stanley.
Dear recovered the only fum-
ble for the Tigers.
Our Big Deal
What Was
That Sparkling?
Did you notice that sparkle
on the football field at Home-
coming? The Silsbee High
School twirlers and drum ma-
jor proudly performed wearing
new sparkle made possible by
financial aid from the school.
The entire uniforms are made
of sequins. Gold was worn by
the twirlers, complemenetd by
matchingtgold wrist bands. The
drum major, Sabrina Birdwell,
wore the black uniform, but
with white wrist bands.
Although many enjoyed the
new look, the uniforms will be
worn on special occasions only,
such as, the forthcoming Lamar
Band Day.
