[ The Brucellosis testing in the
county has been going slow
due the weather the past
three weeks If the weather
will permit the testing could speed
up and move on faster. Last week
they tested 94 herds of 1,107 head
of cattle. Two herds were infected
with 9. suspects and 8 positive re
actors. This makes a total of 804
herds, 29 infected herds. With 11.
525 head showing 54 suspects, and
81 positive reactors, and 494 bead
have been vaccinated At the pre-
sent time the testers have complet

Researchers at the nearby Live-
stock and Forage Research Center
at McGregor are studying produc-
tion techniques that could lead to
intensification of thej^Texas sheep
production industry.
Geneticist Maurice Shelton, who
is in charge of sheep and goat re-
search at the Center, says rising
costs of land and other inputs in
sheep production have spurred in-
terest in ways to increase product
ion of each ewe
Tn research projects at the Cen
ter, Shelton is working on a three
pronged program designed to make
intensified sheep production poss-
ible. The system involves early
weaning of lambs, use of high con
centratc or high grain rations, and
multiple lambing.
Progress in this research will be
the basis for some of the reports
and discussions at the Center's an-
nual Sheep and Angora Goat Field
Day to be held April 15.
Instead of weaning lambs at five
or six months of age. Shelton has
been weaning them when they are
only about half that old This ear-
ly weaning could let producers
concentrate management on the
lambs rather than on both the
lambs and their mothers, according
to .the scientist.
Numerous research reports have
shown that milk production of ewes
is of minor importance after right
to 10 weeks and Shelton says that
at this age anatomical develop-
Confirmation Rites Slated
April 11 At Zion Church
Confirmation rites will be held
on Sunday, April 11 at Zion United
Church of Christ, Womack, during
the morning worship hour.
Rites of confirmation wilt be ad-
ministered to the following: Jimmy
Conrad, Mike Conrad, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Victor Conrad; Garland

nold Braune; Billy Helms, son of

Mrs. Danila Wilson 111.
ment of lambs is approximately
proportional to adult sheep.
Shortage and expense of quality
roughages kept producers from
fattening their iambs in past war*
But early weaning makes possible
the use of high grain fattening ra-
tions. Shelton is now working to
find the rations that give the best
performance
With the iambs weaned early,
the ewes can be bred much sooner
than with conventional systems In
studies at the Center, ewes have
produced two lamb crops in a span
of only 14 months.
