Hunting Can Continue As Long
As Hunters are Good Citizens
Deer hunting — which in recent
wars has become both a big sport and
a considerable economic boom to Bosque
County — opens its 1971 season this
Saturday. Nov. 13th.
As the opening day approaches. The
Clifton Record would remind all hunters
of several responsibilities, that go along
with this sport, which every hunter
should know and understand.
First, and most important, is gun
safety! Todays high-powered ammuni-
tion and more accurate rifles will shoot
half-way across the county — so to
speak — and certainly across your lease.
One act of carelessness or ignorance
about your gun and or your target could
cause an accident that would haunt the
hunter the rest of his life.
There's a • story going around that
a couple of out-of-town hunters were
having breakfast in a Clifton cafe dur-
ing deer season last year and one was
overheard to sav: “Man 1 got a good noise
shot yesterday." while the other replied.
‘'Yea. and I got a good movement shot
yesterday "
To any sensible person shooting
at noise or at a movement is foolhardy,
and it can easily result in death or ser-
ious' injury to another person or valua-
ble livestock. One would think everyone
would know this, but every year people
take dumb chances, and invariably un-
necessary accidents occur.
Another common hunting hazard is
the mixing of "alcohol and firearms."
To drink and shoot is just as stupid as to
drink and drive, and just about as dan-
generous Both reflexes and judgment are
dulled bv drinking, and this type offend-
er is a threat to himself and everything
else around him.
Second, hunters should obey all
federal, state and local game laws and

and thereby continue to exist.
Obeying game laws can be vital to ley’ was in charge of the pro-
file continuation of th-e sport of hunting ! gram and the Thankoffering in-

Modern game management techni- j ing boxes were received. The
ques have proven to be beneficial to both ; Elizabeth Circle members were
hunters and to the game animals and ; Jj0510^ the fellowship
birds. Sometimes over population of non- houI Mrs- E B- Harris conduct-
hunted game can cause some game to
starve out and can be as bad as over-
hunting. This is another good reason for
cooperating with the game law's.
A third thing to remember is the
hunter's responsibility to the landowner
w here he hunts. This reminder shouldn't
be necessary, as all smart hunters should
know that if they want to come back
they need to treat the landowner right.
Siiil you’d be surprised how many
so-called “hunters” come on the field
without proper training or equipment,
leave the ranch gates open, litter the
area with cans and trash, and even
shoot the farm's livestock, or set the
woods on fire. These are stupid mistakes,
and a few of these offenders can ruin a
good sport for many hunters who are
rseponsible to the landowners.
Common sense, training in the use
of firearms, being safe in the field, and
using the Golden Rule in dealing with
landowners can benefit everyone. With-
out these, we may see the’time come
when only millionaires with their own
game preserves will be able to hunt.
