Astranmr from the country set down In Broadway
who had never Tinted New fork before during the
tlelfhlnr season would Imagine the whole city had
cone craxv. Yeaterdar and today. It has been a per.

out. making the most cf the weather while it lasts.
Such a norm has wot been experienced In the North for
twentrvearsiand from accounts that nave cometn
from different Quarters it has extended hundred of
miles In every direction. The amount oi aamaxe oone

been reedted. Anion others the brie Testa from
from Galveston for Boston went ashore on the morning

sails were all blown awar. The crew were saved. Va
rious other reads were wrecked. The Canada now
several days over her time has just armed after a
very stormy pasuee and will probably reach Bostoj
in time for ber mails to be received here on Thursday.
She brines three days later dates than thoe received
by the Araso. whkh arrived on Su&day Her new
wilt of course reach you by telegraph) long before the
receipt of this. Ihe price of cotton still keeps op and
the anticpated decline owing to the prospect of a Urge
coo. Is not perceptible- The market here continue
dim without any decline In prices though the opera
don for some days past have been Ughb Conares
has adjourned till to-morrow. In order to celebrate the
anniversary of the battle of New Orleans. Numerous
entertainments bare been got up In this city in honor
of tht 6th which Is being duly observed. All 'lie mails
are behind their time especially those from the South
The latest dates I have from Galveston are to the S3 -h
alt-just nineteen days some three days longer than it n I
quires to ko from New Orleans to California. This Is not al-
toEcUierattrbutablettheweathersincetbeatormonly commenced on the evening of the 5th and several
maQs were then du. I find that anions the numerous
papers sent here Irani our officer not one-half are re
celved. and many oT on'- Fubscrfbers had concluded we
only sent them occasionally. At this season when the
proceeding! of our Legislature are looked for with so
much interest It is a source of much annoyance to
many aho have no other means of cettlns Texas news.
Since my arrival here I hare not met with a single
Texan nor can I heard butonelathedty. At such a
seassn. none but those who have orrent business would
be dupoKd to Tislt such a climate. It Is snowing gala
to-night and there is every prospect of a continuance
of this weather. Broadway presents a scene thatbex-'
cars an description. Every kind of rehlcle seems put
in requisition and the crowds that are out. indicate a
rood time for the livery stable keepers who are exact-
Ice the most exorbitant charges.- As much as ten. fif-
teen and even twenty dollars is charged for a short
sleigh nde yet despite of this the street are full of
vehicles crowded to overflowing. Some of the public
sleighs earn from one hundred and fifty to two hundred
oasaengers drawn by six and sometimes eight horse
Tbe tooting of horns screeching singing and shouting
that is going on mingled with the everlasting' tinkling
of bells would Indicate that New Tork was a perfect
Pe-rlam. and all Its inmates bad been turned out at once.
WbeeU and axlea are laid by and everything ts
transported on the sleigh from tbe cumbrous dray(
with Us full packed load of merchandise which
slides over the enow al an easy pace to the thirty
pound shell with lu last driver making; two forly
long the street to the Imminent danger of all foo
passengers who msy be crossing. Notwithstanding
ihe stale of the streets which arc in many place
knee-deep lo enow tbe aWe walks aro crowded by
(.idles who seem to erjoj the fun and wade tbroogb
every obstruction regardless of the many jokes to
which tbey expose themselves as well as tbeir lower
appendages. Alt look happy and good humored aa
If they were out on a jol ideation and were deter-
mined to make tbe mott of it while It may last.'
None of tbe cars are jet runniDgJtbough efforts
bave been made lo clear tbe tracks bat the Mayor
has Interposed and prevrnted the enow being re-
moTed to the obstruction of the aide walks.
In all the narrow streets leading from Broadway
ibe aide waits are partially cleared and the snow
piled up In tbe middle of the streets several j feet
blgb sotbst foot passengers have to take It Indian
tile. Most! or my business lying in' these streets!
have been footing It all day long and bare not jei
bed time to enjoy lbs pleasure of a sleigh ride but
as tbe enow bids fair to continue-for some time 1
will doubtless bare many chances to join In the ex-
citement and furaUb you with some incidents
prcullarlo sleighing.
I aa staying sa usual at tbe Irving House which
has been recently changed tad la now kept on the
European plan whkh teems to giro very general
all-faction. So much a day is charged for your
room and jou can take meals in roe house or out
being only charged for wbs. you actually have.' Tbe
bill of fare is equal to that ot the beat hotels and
joucan make a dinner cott two ahilliuga or two
Jollara according to what you call for. To those
like myself who bave business out this Is an exeet-
lenl arrangement as It la frequently more convenient
to drop into a restaurant and take a meal than lo
hurry to your hotel at a stated hour.
I hare no doubt the Irving House .will be well
patronised during the coming season by psrtlri
from the South who canflodas good accommoda
tion there as at the St. Nicholas or sny of the crack
hotel with the privilege of going where tbey ptease
during the day without betcg charged the usual per
