Liability of Bboeebs. One of the Xew
York courts has decided that a note broker
selling notes on commission as the agent of
others unless he disclose the name of the per-
son for whom he is acting must be regarded
as the principal and subject to the legal Ha
bilities of a holder transferring a note. In
the case before the court a broker sold a pro-
missory note on which the names of broker
and endorser were forgeries although he was
ignorant of the fact and he wa held to be
liable for the amount.

The loss of the clipper ship Racer bound
from Liverpool for Xew York advised by the
steamer Canada affects the Xew York insur-
ance companies to the tnne of nearly two
hundred thousand dollars. The vessel was
one of the largest class and valued at about
ninety thousand dollars and her cargo was
probably worth as ranch more
Wheat ik Tatette CooNTr. The I
Grange True Issue says ;
Mr. Gates has ten acres of wheat now al-
most ready for harvest which he thinks will
yield an average of twenty bushels per acre.
This is the second experiment he has made
both of which has resulted favorably. We
learn that there Is about being established a
steam mill in this vicinity with all the neces-
sary apparatus for making flour.
Americampm ix Congress A Washing-
ton correspondent or the Philadelphia Ledger
says: "The Americans evidently showed that
they bad a majority in the House when to-
day they carried the substitute to the District
of Colombia SaCrage BUI. so amending Has
to preclude naturalized citizens from otiag
unless tbey were naturalized six months previ-
ous to the day of election."

Bctcsn op Specie raoir Ecbope. The
steamer Fulton which arrived at New York
on Wednesday night from Liverpool brought
over in specie $1101-00. This will have the
effect to ease np monetary affairs not so much
from the amount as its favorable premoni-
tions. Louis Nafoleox akd the English Pbess.
Since the cessation of hostilities a much less
friendly tone jjerrades the English press to-
wards Lonis Napoleon ; his acts are criticised
with more asperity; and the recent speech
which Count Walewski made at the confer-
ence the burden of which was to silence the
press or Belgium in order to please his Im-
perial master has been relented in strong
editorial articles.
Tee Height op Politeness. A. Lake of
Providence Ky. last week having occasion
in the course of his private affairs to shoot
one Pennington bestowed by mistake the
leaden gratuity upon one Patterson. Into the
breast of the aforesaid Patterson he orrone-
ouity put a bullet ; but discovering that he
had shot the wrong man. he in the genteelest
Wa)i begged pardon of the sufferer who with
Infinite sweetness granted the boon.

States.
The Conventions No less than Tour Na-
tional Conventions will be held in the United
States during the month of Jane. The Demo-
cratic Convention will assemble at Cincinnati
on the 2d of that month. On the 12th an-
other National Convention will be held in
New York. It will consist or the seceding
delegates from the American National Con-
vention together with others who have since
been elected chiefly from the Northern States.

The Wealth op Tbikitt Church New
Yore. The rector of the above church says
a New York paper estimates the whole pro-
perty in its possession at $10000000 ! Judge
Jay shows it to be double that amount. There
Is no ecclesiastical corporation in England
that has so much wealth In its possession and
it is questionable If another similar chorch or-
ganization in the world possesses so great an
amount of moneyed means.
A Warning. A late number of the Courier
da Pas de Calais contains the following.
"Two men lately entered an Inn In Cambrai
ordered coffee and died shortly after swallow-
ing a cap each. The landlady summoned the
police who declared that the men had been
poisoned. 'Impossible!' cried the landlady
'they have only drank a cup or coffee a piece
and that can do no harm.1 Sae at once drank
a cup to prove Its innocence. The Bame result
however ensued in her case as she was seized
witn tembie pains and also died. On exami-
ning the pot a box of lncifer or locofoco
matches was found lying In it."
The Spiritualists are determined to have a
hand In the great political struggle this year
and have nominated Judge Edmonds of New
York for President and A. J. Davis for Vice
President. If Edmonds and Davis can ob-
tain the votes of the spirits or all the dead
men they have a chance for a tolerably large
majority overall competitors.
