of the White Man was tendered some time
since by Got. Pickens of Sooth Carolina a
commission in the regular army of that Btate.
While the Captain feels highly honored Jy the
compliment be holds that the State of his
adoption has the first claims to his services
and he has notified Gov. Pickens that be holds
himself in readiness for any orders emanating
from Texas.
Capt ilamner wears the gold medal pre-

recent atrocities towards Texians; and seems
to think that parties in Texas are preparing
to invade his territory. He hopes such is not

but for which they would be compelled to
starre or emigrate. lie shows also that sev
eral millions of the inhabitants of the North
western States are also supported by the mar-
ket for their products afforded by the South
and that the money paid by tbe Northeastern
States for the products of the Northwestern
States is obtained mainly from the South;
and he thus shows that a large portion ol the
population of the Northeastern and N. W. States
is sustained by slave labor. Mr. Hunter then
proceeds to show that tbe operation of pro-
tective tarifls and even tariffs for revenue
hare thrown the burthen of the government
unequally upon the agricultural States of the
South who being tbe chief consumers of the
protected articles bare paid tbe increased
price into tbe pockctB of ihe Northern pro
ducers. But the Sontb have not complained
of this but they hare been driven to despera-
tion by the persistent efforts of the North for
to ycars.to overthrow the institution of slavery.

The course pursued by Bishop Gregg of

Though removed by his religious duties from
