—If the moonshiners of the moun-
tainers around here are breath-
ing easier today, it’s because
Charlie Felts, 70, has retired.
Felts has been a government
revenuer for 30 years, 27 of them

in Wilkes County, which has been
described as the “moonshine cap-
ital of the world.”
Two weeks before Felts’ retire-
ment Thursday, the Federal Al-
cohol and Tobacco Tax Division
honored him as the agent credit-
ed with destroying more stills
than any other man in the coun-
try.
The records don’t show, and
even Felts isn’t sure, how many
