The Texas and Pacific Railway Company
Location and Operation. The Texas and Pacific main line enters
Dallas from the east about half way between U.S. 80 and Scyene Road.
The T, & P. formerly went through Dallas along its line north of Fair
park and then down Pacific Avenue. This produced a serious conflict
in the business district and in 1921 a portion of the T. & P. line was
removed and through trains are now operated over the Southern Pacific
Belt Line from the TO&PO junction to the main line of the Southern
Pacific, thence over this line and the tracks of the Union Terminal
Company through the Terminal area to a connection with the T.& P. main
line near Houston Street. The T.& P. main line to the west is located
a short distance south of Singleton Boulevard.
The T.& P. operates an average of 4.4 passenger trains per day
each way through Dallas. Slightly more than 9 freight trains are
operated each way through the city. Only 1 freight train, a local
from Mineola, terminates at the East Dallas yard of the T.& P. at
Fitzhugh Avenue and Gaisford Street. Other freight trains, when leaving
cars at Dallas, back into or out of this yard from the T.& P. junction.,
The East Dallas lard contains two sets of classification tracks,
engine terminal and a car repair shed. The city yard, located at Gaston
Avenue and Hawkins Street, contains team tracks, industrial spurs, an
abandoned freight house that is rented, and two automobile unloading tracks.
The freight house, located at Pacific Avenue and Griffin Street, is
a one story building 40 feet by 400 feet with a four story brick building
at the Griffin Street side, served by 3 house tracks with a capacity of
33 cars.
The T. & P0 interchanges freight with: Southern Pacific at "Fox"
(along Southern Pacific Belt Line), L.& A., Santa Fe & Frisco at Willow
Street, M--K-T at Houston Street, Cotton Belt at south end of Austin Street
and on Pacific Avenue west of the Union Terminal.
General offices of the T. & P0 are maintained in Dallas.
Industrial Areas. The T.& P0 serves 54 industries within the city
limits as well as additional industries in West Dallas outside the city.
Within the city many of these are located in two major industrial districts.
One is the area bounded by Lamar Street, Ross Avenue, Field Street, and
McKinney Avenue0 This is served by 3 tracksin the middle of each block
on right of way owned by the T.& P. The block bounded by Griffin, McKinney,
Magnolia, and Munger in this district is owned by the T.& P. and contains
another automobile unloading platform. The other industrial area is bounded
by Beeman Avenue, Winslow Street, and the alleys in the rear of Barry Avenue
and Henderson Avenue.
Grade 6eparations. With the elimination of movement on Pacific Avenue
there hre no major grade separation problems along the main line of the
T.& P0 in the developed parts of the urban area. Several outlying grade
crossings of major streets, particularly in the West Dallas area, are in
need of separation.- 18 -
