Compression Device. The
device — obtained through
a matching grant written by
the department — allows
chest compressions to con-
tinue without interruption.
“Sudden cardiac arrest
remains a leading cause of
death in the Western world.
Although the average age is
around 70, sudden cardiac
arrest can strike even the
young and athletic,” Davis
said. “The majority, 95 per-
cent of all patients, die be-
fore they reach the hospital.
Unfortunately these figures
have not changed through-
out the years. If advanced
care is readily available, it
may be as high as 25-30 per-
cent of all patients could sur-
vive.”
The Lucas device ensures
that compressions are given
with correct frequency and
depth, Davis said. It will give
equal compression and de-
compression time, and allow-
ing for full recoil of the chest
between each compression,
without loss of quality over
time, Davis said.
“These are parameters that
research has found crucial for
creating good blood circula-
tion and increasing survival
in cardiac arrest patients,”
Davis said.
The device allows for
Keene Fire Rescue to take
care of a cardiac arrest with
fewer people. This device is
like adding personnel to the
crew that doesn’t get tired
of providing chest compres-
sions, KFR Chief Matt Gillin
said.
Relay For Life team captain’s meeting
will be Tuesday, Feb. 22, in Cleburne
The American Cancer Society needs teams
for the ninth annual Relay For Life of John-
son County scheduled for June 10-11 at the
outdoor track at Cleburne High School.
A team captain’s meeting will be held at 6
p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 22, at the Cleburne Cham-
ber of Commerce Building to share with com-
munity members the importance of Relay For
Life and its impact on the fight against cancer.
No registration fee will be charged the teams
who register before or at this meeting, orga-
nizer Mary Ann Wheatley said.
Relay For Life is the American Cancer So-
ciety’s national signature, overnight fundrais-
ing activity.
Teams gather with tents and sleeping bags
to participate in the largest fundraising walk
in the nation.
To register a team, contact Monica Faram
at 817 247 7495.
Relay For Life is a overnight event that mo-
bilizes communities throughout the country
to celebrate survivors, remember loved ones,
and empower others to fight back against a
disease that takes too much.
“The event raises awareness about the
progress against cancer while also raising
funds to fight the disease,” Faram said. “Team
captains have a critical role in the Relay and
are individuals who are willing to give their
time and energy to this exciting community
event, as a volunteer or as a participant, have
made a commitment to fight back against
cancer.”

Advertising with the Star Group really works!
"Deer Creek has advertised with
The Star Group for many years.
We've had great response from
Burleson, Crowley and the sur-

He enjoys sponsoring the "Pet of
the Week" which has worked well,
finding many pets new homes.
Dr. Denton has always received
the Burleson Star, and even now
that he lives in Grandview, he and
his wife still enjoy the Burleson
Star. He says" It's the way to find
local news."
