She Showed Me How
To Spit—
A Grace-Full Lady Named Marilyn
By Kay King, free-lance writer and author of
10 devotional booh, includingWhen You Hurt Too Much to Pray, Praise.
If Mama sees that title from where she is, there might be trouble
waiting for me in heaven. While on earth she did everything she
could to make sure my sister Judy and I would grow up to be “re-
fined ladies”—a favorite Talley term. And we heard her version pretty
often: “Refined girls never chew gum or telephone boys—and they
cross their legs at the ankles when sitting on stage. . . .’’Well, gum
never appealed to me, and I wasn’t invited to center stage that often.
While our mother’s unwavering expectations were unmistak-
able, she never met a beautiful, refined woman who inspired me to
spit. Marilyn Scott, a highly respected, always-admired mentor in
the Lord . She’s been someone to whom I’ve taken impossible prob-
lems and prayer needs—even frustrations and disappointments—and
come away with counsel streaming from God’s throne of grace.
Years ago, for instance, this octogenarian listened to my profuse
agitation with another believer, a mutual friend. Hoping for consola-
tion or at most, empathy, I was more than startled by Marilyn’s stern
admonition.
“Kay, you must learn to swallow the chicken and spit out the
bones!”
Hmm. Bones—those sharp splinters of human sin nature never
meant to be taken in and digested—anger, hurt feelings, insults, gos-

sip, even betrayal. Well, I knew where this retired teacher was com-
ing from—that Same Reservoir from which our mother had drawn a
lifetime of practical wisdom. “Judge not that you be not judged” was
Mama’s reminder from the back side of our red chrome kitchen table.
And much as I’d not expected, Marilyn sent me home with a Bible
full of confirmation concerning Matthew 7:1. Just a few examples
here illustrate the necessity of “spitting out ‘bones.’”
Noah, known as a just man and perfect in his generation, actu-
ally “walked with God.” Regrettably, after his miraculous rescue
inside the ark, this man faltered far outside God’s will and fell into a
sorrowful sin that affected his own family.
Then there was a Abraham. Because he believed God’s promise
to perform that miracle, it was counted unto him for righteousness.
But often his recurring query deeply hurt the Lord’s heart: “How
shall I know this?”
King David, that “man after God’s own heart,” yielded to temp-
tation which led to adultery and murder. At life’s end, though, Scrip-
ture calls him “the sweet psalmist of Israel” who still praised God,
ever looking to his “tower of salvation.”
The New Testament also records accounts of those whose im-
perfections provided perfect places for the Holy Spirit to refine
transgressions into Godlike qualities. Thomas the doubter comes
to mind.. His dogged skepticism melted away only after a personal
encounter with Christ (My, how that always preaches!)
And what about Mary Magdalene, from whom Jesus had cast
out seven demons? Was not she the first person to whom the Savior
appeared by calling her name near the empty tomb?
Oh, we mustn’t forget that fiery disciple whose impulsive sword
defended the King of Kings in Gethsemene and then denied Him
that same night. After forgiveness and resurrection power and out-
pouring of Holy Ghost anointing, this transformed old fisherman’s
sermon at Pentecost rang out words that every person on earth will
hear before Christ’s return: “Whosoever shall call on the name of the
Lord shall be saved.”—Acts 2:21. And Titus 2:11 is just as amazing!
grownup girl who works really hard every day to practice the refined
art of . . . spitting out bones!

Life is a great gift given to us by God.
As I have entered into the second half of life, I often reflect back
upon where I have been. It has been so bizarre to me — the greatest
blessings have come in the midst of things I would consider “small
deaths” or “curses”...things that have, to some degree, caused pain,
grief, and sorrow.
These events have allowed me to somewhat relax my death grip
upon the need to control. Yet, I have not become completely passive
because of this. I’ve grown to realize that, ultimately, things will be
okay.
For me, the greatest growth has come from this process. You
can’t force it. You can’t proactively make it happen. It is not an
“achievement”. You can’t control it. It comes about in the midst of
the flow of life. It is not immediate. It is invisible to the eye, and only
perceived once reflected upon at a later point in time.
That which I do not want, I have been given...
.. .and as odd as it may sound, I would not have it any other way.
Life is indeed a gift from God...and on this earth, in many
ways, remains a blessed mystery.
Blessings, Pastor Walter
Here’s the takeaway. Since our Holy Father has been spitting
out bones of contention for these many generations, cherishing righ-
teousness in folks and forgiving their sin, how can we do less than
follow This Perfect Example? I’m pretty sure Mama’s smiling and
nodding because my friend Marilyn—and God—haven’t given up on a
