THE GREAT FRESHET.
The Albany Knickerbocker of Monday
the lGth ult. states that the water rose over
the pier on Saturday morning and at 12 o'-
clock the ice started and moved for about a
quarter of irmile down when it stopped
The ice banked np on the pier in piles almost
mountain high and caused considerable de-
struction of property.
The ice about 3 o'clock started again and
moved with great rapidity carrying every
thing before :t. About 5 o'clock k wasar-
rested in its onward progress below the city
somewhere neer Cdstlasoojeven miles down
where Jl dammed up. The water' from this
time began to rise very fast inHndating the
entire lower port eftbe cky and driving peo
pie from thsindwofha-s in hundreds.
But few expected to sec the water so high
and butlktle preparation was made foritnd
hundreds rallied to-rest to wake up with the
water two or tkree foot deep in their dwellings.-
About midnight the water began to
rise with greet raptdityand continued io rise
till about .2 o'clock on'Sunday morning when
it tvas el its greatest height beiag six inches
higher than it was in IS39. The poor
people living along the dock and in the sot
eral streots in the lower part of the cky have
been completely drownad out and have suffer
ed greatly from hunger wi-.t and cold.
In the baieoiBal of a dwelling house in
Broadway not far from Maiden Line is a

occurred in 1S02 Hreorsago. Thegrcat
