who bad started with his company of Ran-
gers 57 In number to attack an Indian vil-
lage and was to have been absent ten days
had been gone some 42 dnys& not been heard
from during the time. Some apprehension
was felt lest he might bare-chanced upon a
large body and been cut off With prudent
management hoivcrer 57 men could not
well be overcome by any body of Indians
ihey were likely to meet.
.A great deal of complaint is made that

Execution. Jesse the negro belonging to
Mr. Grinder of Fanninconnty who wassen-
)en:cd lo be hung for the murder of Morgan
Sleeks underwent the sentence of the law
nt Bonham on the 27th nit. He never from
the first denied the killing but justified the
net on account of threats which he said
Meets had made against him. He died with
fortitude and made nmo remarks upon the
scafioldin which he made serious charges
against individuals living near Sir. Grinder
Just before swinging off he requested tbst
somo one would pray for him which was
accordingly done when shaking the hand
of the sheriff" and rrsigaing himself to his
fate he was launched ioto eternity: He was
a dangerous negro. Having considerable
intellect and free from proper control he
jiad asrnmed too independent and self deter-
mined a course of action cud would neces-
sarily have met a violent death at some fu-
ture time il his career had not bean arres!.

A petition is about to be
gncture. praying Congress to
stage route between these
places. Il will be signed by every body it
will be presented to and we trust that when
it is forwarded our delegation or at leajtj
those of them who know its importance and
necessity to this section of country will give
il their earnest advocacy.
By the present arrangement New Orleans
papers reach us in 13 to 25 days. When
ever there is individual conveyanco by way
of Shrevcport we get them in eight or nine
This however is only accomplished bj way
of the river. The land route to Shrevepor.
is some days slower. The establishment of
the Stage route however and the forwarding
of the mails to this section duecttous in
stead of sending them away around bv Lit
tie Rock and Washington Arkansas would
facilitate the communication between us and
Sbrerepoit and New Orleans with which
two places our business mainly lies immense-
iy.
This section ol country is rich is becoming
densely populated and is entitled to belter
usage than it gets from the Post Office De-
partment. We know no reason why our mails should
go like Robin Hoods paths through Sbcr
wood forest in every direction except a;
straight one from the place of departure to
the place of destination and we trust that un-
less good leatoo can ba shoivn (or it the mat.
ter will be remedied at soon as practicable.
Not ordered like the routes through the new
Counties which have net yet been thought
of by :he agent so far as ue can ascertain-
certainly never examined and started but
that this mail stage line which is needed
will be authorized and let at once to a res
ponsible contractor.
By eitablishing this and then making
Clarksvilletbe distributing point for North
ern Texas and running the new county
routes as already ordered our whole region
of Country will be supplied with as much
mail facility as the extent of its communica
tions warrant. The mail to CI-rLsrille.
would be the main bulk and tbe Stage would
pass through Jrflerton and tbe County Seat
of Titus County serving their wants and
then the ordinary ba js for horse conveyance.
would be amply sufficient to carry off the re
maioder.
By tbe way while writinj: upon this sub
ieet we would bo glad to learn if any one
can give us information why the routes to
-
he new Counties are not established. Seven
or eight new counties near us and not a mail
route through any of them. The

We do not recollect to have seen any re
cord of feats of gallant daring performed by
him at Palo Aho or Monterey although
the very first to leave Galveston to succor
bis distinguished re'atira Gen. Taylor.
Regardless of position where his country
called for service although a General by
light he left Galveston without waiting the
tardy movement of men of less enthusiasm
of character and soits mounted and armed
he left for the field of danger. Every
where on bis route westward we saw his
progress heralded until he reached Mata-
moros and there we feet him.
We presume of coarse that attracted by
his reputation and promptkcwJe troops gath
ered louml his .Wty plume wheree'er he
went indeed we saw ttatemfate in several
papers of the west that be bad a company
with him and K is well kaowa that he left
Galveston without any.
Where is the prince of diplomatics tbe
most courteous of gentlemen Surely he
has not let slip the moetgloiiotts opportunity
for distinction ibatsoWier ever knew in our
day. Surely upon seme of those desperate
fields by "Bravo's waters" bis falchion has
gleamed o'er the heads of the slain and his
gal la fit form bees the gathering signal for
the melee.
Either dark injustice has been dene to one
of tbe boasts of our State or he has boged
down hi sane of lb marshy flats of the
Rio Grande and never yet been able to
reach the scene of active warfare. Tbe last
account westw of bim be was at an enter-
tainsitnt giun at tbe late bead quarters o

Wherever he is prosperity attend html
U e hepe soon to bear that bis military rank
is as well merited as every one knows his
diplomatic to have been; aBd that upon every
field of fight he may gather rushes bril
liant as those obtained by bfc pre-eminently
successful diplomacy.

Col. "Wood's Reoikext of Texas Vol-
ENTSKRt. We see in the Telegraph the
official report of Col. Wood to Gen. Hen-
derson detailing tbe acts of bis command at
Monterey. We do not know that its publi-
cation in full would give much additional
information to our readers. The point of
the whole b that his men acted gallantly
and that when ordeied to retire they were
abosl'to obtain positions giving them power
to rake the Mexican troops in tlje riaiu
plaza.
The Colonel speaks highly of tlje sever-
al officers under his command Lieut. CoL
Alyrick Major Scurry and ihi Captains'of
compapies and eonclu-les as follows;
"Many instances of individual daring and
indifference to danger displayed both by

ing the total popular vote.
For instance in Pennsylvania- where the
Whigs bavecanied nearly every thing thW
bave polled 70000 less votes than Mr. Clay
received when Mr. Polk beat him G.000
Still we believe there has been a change a.
mong the voters as well as ia the result ofl
the vote; and that change has been pioduced
in Pennsylvania by the passage of the new
revenue b'll in Maine and New Hampshire
by a manifest coalmen of Abolitionists with
the Whig aod in New York ty ihe com
bjned action of thesetwo causes and coalition
of the ami rent faction (who baves-uelly to

Governor Wright haviog becomo odious to
