City, KNB toast volunteers

Harriet Bellmeyer and Dr. Dick Butler hold their certificates from the Keep Nava-
sota Beautiful Commission, for their dedication to keeping the city beautiful, at
Monday’s city council meeting. They are pictured with (from left) council mem-
ber Bernie Gessner, KNB member Scott McDonald, Mayor Pro-Tern Peter Can-
ney, Mayor Bery Miller, council member Geoff Horn and KNB coordinator Cindy
Armatys.

Dr. Dick Butler and
Harriet Bellmyer of Nava-
sota have been recognized
for going above and be-
yond.
The Keep Navasota
Beautiful (KNB) Commis-
sion presented the seniors
with We’ve Noticed and
We Thank You Awards at
Monday night’s council
meeting.
“The awards recognize
individuals or groups who
make a difference in the
community, while repre-
senting the mission of
Keep Texas Beautiful and
Keep Navasota Beautiful,”
Affiliate Coordinator
Cindy Armatys said.
Dr. Butler and
Bellmyer were selected for
the Outstanding Senior
Citizen Award category.
Despite a number of
health issues and
hot summer temperatures,
KNB member Scott Mc-
Donald said Dr. Butler was
noticed for periodically
mowing the grounds of his
church, as well as several
neighbors’ properties “in
order to keep the neighbor-
hood looking nice.”
Street Department
Foreman Norbert Valadez
nominated Bellmyer for
assisting many neighbors
who were unable to load
and transport unwanted
junk and debris during the
annual City Spring
Cleanup event.
In addition, Bellmyer
has participated in a num-
ber of community beautifi-
cation events over the
years, including volunteer-
ing for cemetery cleanup
days at Oakland Cemetery,
collecting litter and cans
for recycling on any given
Saturday, and participating
in the annual Trash Off
Litter Cleanup.
“The City of Navasota
and the Keep Navasota
Beautiful committee ap-
preciate the efforts of these
two individuals, as they
take great pride in their
community by keeping
Navasota clean and beau-
tiful,” McDonald said.
City magazine
A full-color, City of
Navasota magazine, which
has been on the back-
burner since before Mar-
keting/Communications
Director Corey Johnson
came on board last fall, is
finally coming to fruition.
Prior to the council’s
unanimous approval,
Johnson told the council
he planned to complete the
project with the help of
McDonald and a team of
professionals. The 100-
page magazine will be
published annually, begin-
ning in March 2014, and
distributed to area hotels
and bed and breakfasts, as
well as tourism centers
throughout Texas. The
magazine will feature
Navasota history and re-
lated sites, local art, places
to shop, airport statistics,
annual events, attractions,
school achievements and
more.
Johnson said advertise-
ments would help offset
the cost of production.
The city agreed to pur-
chase 10,000 copies at
$1.60 per copy, which will
be paid for with 2013-14
Hotel/Motel Occupancy
Tax (HOT) funds and in-
cludes eight, full-page ads
for city advertising.
Sanctions and more
The council also sanc-
tioned the upcoming Eco
Fair at the Navasota Cen-
ter and Lanterns and Leg-
ends at Oakland Cemetery,
and heard a presentation
on Grimes St. Joseph Hos-
pital’s new mental health
program launched for sen-
iors. Director Michelle
Goodson, MPsy MABA
said the senior outreach
program is intended to
make clients feel right at
home, while improving
their mental health and so-
cial circles of support.
Anyone interested in

Senior Renewal Program,

A first reading of Ordi-
nance No. 709-13 was also
approved. The ordinance
authorizes the following:
suspension of the effective
date for an additional 90
days, beyond the Oct. 30
effective date proposed by
Entergy Texas, Inc., in
connection with its rate in-
crease application entitled
“Application of Entergy
Texas, Inc. for authority to
change rates and to recon-
cile fuel costs,” filed on
Sept. 25; authorizing the
hiring of lawyer and rate
experts; authorizing the
City’s participation to the
full extent permitted by
law at the Public Utility
Commission of Texas, re-
quiring reimbursement of
municipal rate case ex-
penses; finding that the
meeting complies with the
open meetings act; and
making other findings and
provisions related to the
subject, and declaring an
effective date.
