HOMICIDE.
It is our painful duly to announce the mo.-t
melancholy occurrence that lias ever hap-
pened in this community yiv. Ed waul W.
I3anton a most promising; and interesting
young gentlemen of this place was shot dead
in the public square on Tuesday morning
liy Geo. A. Daws tho Dagucrrotypist.
The circumstances attending the sad alFait
re about as tollow:
Davis had taken pictures for several of
the Banton family. A y. unger brother of the
deceased had culled to settle for them and
take jhenHienic. One or perhaps two of
the pictures were objected to on some
grounds. Hereupon a quarrel ensued be
tween the partios which was term natcu by
the interference of mutual friends On the
next day or a few days afterwards D.ii-
placarded the Banton family by posting up
about Im room some notices which were con-
sidered scandalous : r.d insulting. This
caused an angry collision between the deceas-
ed and Davis on Mondjy evening at Median's
hotel where they were both boat ding. This
difficulty was likewise stopped by the inter
Tenlion of the persons present. Ei cry one
hoped that the difficulty had now ended as
Davis was preparing to leave town early ne.U
morning. On the net morning however as
Banton wa crossing the sqvaie to his break-
fast Davis who was occupying a house ad-
jacent to and to the right of the hotel shot
liim dead in his tracks with a title oryauger
loaded with one large ball and several buck
thot. The ball went in an inch or two above
the left nipple and lodged in the back near
the loft shoulder. One shot struck him 111
the knee and another passed through his
hat. He Jell and expired without uttering a
word. No one saw Davis at the time he shot.
His door was paitially closed or open so far
only as to enable him to shoot through.
Soon after the killing Davis gave Irmself
up to Justice Kogers and is now on trial bc-
fore the examining court.
As the whole matter will undergo a judicial
investigation before the proper tribunal wc
forbear comment at present remarking only
that this is tlie first occurrence 01 me Kind
that has ever happened in Huntsville. Wc
pray God it may be the Jast.
v Mr. Banton was buried with Masonic hon-
ors. The Sous of Temperance too of which
order he was an honored member and a
large concourse of people followed him to
. his last resting place. As the solemn burial
service of the "mystic brotherhood" was
read over the inanimate body oi him who but
