Penrose severally te.-tilied to haiing mar
ried tlie prisoner in ISU. A young man
named Ilam'.in stated that Bramall had three
w'ues living in America and had barely es
with her parents at Liakeartl. 1 lie prison-
er left her in April 1S42. The witness here
produced the lelter which the pi isoner had
vrittcn to his wife upon his dcpaiturc ex-
cusing himself for the absence of a day or
two.
The Lord Major "Prisoner doyou wish
to sav an thing?"
The prisoner haing retiicd for some min-
utes in order to communicate with his attor-
ney declined making any observations. Mr.
Buchanan the counsel said the prisoner
wished him to state that some of the women
who came forward against him knew when
they were receiving his addresses thai he
was a married man.
The Lord Mayor "If such be the case it
would be an aggravation of his crime for in
again marrying he was making those who
were aware of the fact patties m the felo-
ny." Tho prisoner requested to he allowed to
romaiivat the Gilspur street Compter until
the time of trial for the convenience of con-
sulting his solicitor upon the subject of his
defence. The Lord Mayor peremptorily re-
fused to grant the lavor and said Newgate
presented adequate facilities. Many strong
expressions of ill-suppressed indigtiation were
uttered against this young scoundrel of a
Turk during the investigation. Between
the first examination and the committal of the
prisoner a gentleman of the medical profes-
sion to whom the pi isoner had become
known in India waited upjn the Loid May-
or.and made some details which showed that
the fcHW had been long in the habit of im-
posing upon young women by a great aiiet-
of gross misrepresentations and that he spoke
of his marriages as forming examples of his
genius in his plans ofscduction. As the case
stands the heaviest punishment that can be
inflicted upon the .is transpoitation for seven
years. This punishment is too light. He
ought to be made to live with him whole nine
of his wives for seven years. That would be
something like punishment.

short distance from the town is sprinkled
with green trees and is a favorite result not
only with the bereaved but with those whose
feelings ate not thus darklv overcast. I met
there one tnorninir a little girl with a half
playful countenance busy blue eye and sun-
ny locks Jicaring in one hand a small cup of
china and in the other a wreath ot lresli
flowers. Feeling a very natural curiosity
to know what she could do with these bright
things in a place that seemed to partake of so
much sadness I watched her light motions.
Reaching a retired grave cpveicd with a
plain marble slab she emptied the seed
which it appeared the cup contained into
-the slight cavities which had been scooped
out in the corners ol lh level tublct and
the wreath on its pure face.
