Navasota students help those in need
Navasota High School held a jacket
and blanket drive between their fourth pe-
riod classes in an effort to assist the Chris-
tian Community Services Center with its
distribution to those in need. The drive
was held Nov. 19 through Dec. 7, and Ms.
Kerekes’ class won with a total of 23 jack-
ets. The winning class received a free
pizza party from Principal Beauchamp.

Iola FFA members celebrate winning second at state
Congratulations to the
Iola FFA Sr. Quiz Team
members who won second
at state, Dec. 1, at Sam
Houston State University
in Huntsville, during the
State Leadership Devel-
opment Events Contest.
The team qualified for
state competition by fin-
ishing first in District 1,
one of the state’s 57 dis-
trict competitions, and
second in Area III, one of
ten area competitions.
There were 5,041 total en-
tries in the statewide tour-
nament with twelve
different events which re-
flect classroom instruc-
tion in basic leadership
skills, which is part of the
agriculture, food and nat-
ural resources curriculum.
Iola FFA team mem-
bers included Braden
House, Mason House,
Morgan Koehn and Will
Mallett.
Anderson-Shiro FFA
also won second in state
for Greenhand Chapter
Conducting.
Both Anderson-Shiro
FFA’s Ag Issues and Jun-
ior Chapter Conducting
teams initially qualified to
compete in the semi-finals
that were held on Nov. 30.
The Ag Issues team
landed in the top 20 in the
state of Texas.
The Texas FFA is the
nation’s largest state FFA
associations with a mem-
bership of 80,000 active
FFA members in Texas
and 1,000 local FFA
chapters. On average
there are approximately
18 schools per district.
FFA programs teach skills
in leadership, career de-
velopment and personal
growth. FFA gives stu-
dents the opportunity to
practically apply class-
room knowledge to real-
world experiences
through local, state and
national competitions.
Sam Houston State
University has partnered
with Texas FFA in hosting
these competitions for 76
years.

New Dimension to Christmas Parade

Jordan Brooks and
SaRoyan Woods, both sen-
iors at Anderson-Shiro
High School, will never
forget the year 2012. The
two are Grimes County 4-
H members who took the
ride of their life this year.
In February, Brooks and
Woods were selected as
delegates to represent
Texas at the National 4-H
Conference in Washington,
D.C. the week of March
24-29, 2012. This confer-
ence is the Secretary of
Agriculture ’ s premier
youth development oppor-
tunity to engage youth in
developing recommenda-
tions for the 4-H Youth De-
velopment Program.
The National 4-H Con-
ference is a working con-
ference in which youth and
adults assist in the develop-
ment of recommendations
to help guide 4-H Youth
Development Programs na-
tionally and in their com-
munities. This event brings
together youth, volunteer
leaders, and state and
county Extension staff
members from across the
United States, the U.S. Ter-
ritories, and the Canadian
Provinces.
While attending the 4-H
National Conference,
Brooks said “I had the
