Crews Tear Down Old Junior High
By Julie Vaughan

A landmark structure
at Canton Independent
School District started
coming down this week
as construction crews
with D.E.A.A. Corpora-
tion of Tyler began the
demolition process of
the three wings that once
served as Canton Junior
High. The wing attached
to the administration of-
fice will remain.
Opened for use during
the 1958-1959 school
year, according to school
records, the wings had
to undergo an asbestos
abatement process first,
before the demolition
crews could began tear-
ing down the brick struc-
tures.

Sales Tax Returns
Continue To Rise

The healthy sales tax numbers were once
again making Canton Economic Development
Corporation board members smile as the year
continues to see an increase.
Sales tax numbers for the month, which re-
flect June sales tax, was up 9.87 percent from
this time last year.
CEDC Executive Director Mercy Rushing
said overall sales tax is up 7.76 percent for the
year compared to last year.
“Every month the sales tax has been up,”
Rushing added.
When asked why she thought there was an
increase in sales tax, Rushing said, “For the
first time we are seeing a full year of factoring
in Applebee’s and Duke’s (travel plaza),
Denny’s and Bean & Burger. You’ve got a lot
of new businesses in town. It’s also that First
Monday is staying healthy.”
“Our economy locally has been healthy and
the people are still coming to First Monday,”
she continued. “It will be nice if we continue
on this trend.”
“It has been a good year,” Rushing added.
“The hotel/motel collections have been good
and overall it has been a really good year for
our local economy, and this is a trend that is
not just happening for us but for other neigh-
boring cities.”
In other business:
-the board discussed the Pocket Park project
which has been budgeted for in the next CEDC
fiscal year.

buildings like that go,”
Canton ISD Superinten-
dent Jay Tullos said, but
noted that, “Through
time and vandalism, it
was going to cost a lot of
money to repair them.”
During the June school
board meeting, trustees
approved the abatement
and demolition process at
a cost of $105,000.
That price tag included
wings.
Also, three other
buildings which in-
cluded the old junior
located on Buffalo
Street, were only abated
for asbestos. Those
buildings were structur-
ally sound, Tullos said,
and will be used in the
future for other projects.
Tullos said hopefully
before the start of the
school year, the district
will have a new school
resource officer, who
will use one of those
buildings as office
space.

The student handbook
and code of conduct
policy were up for minor
changes during Monday
night’s Canton Indepen-
dent School Board of
Trustees meeting.
There were two minor
changes to both the
handbook and code of
conduct policy that drew
discussion as CISD Su-
perintendent Jay Tullos
explained to the board
how these changes came
about.
Concerns from teach-
ers, principals and rec-
ommendations from
committees that are re-
quested to look at current
policies in place, are
what many times help
determine policy up-
dates, Tullos told the
board.
The two major
changes pointed out by
Tullos included the sec-
tion on Electronic De-
vices in Restrooms/
Dressing Areas, and
Questioning Students At
School.
According to the Stu-
dent Code of Conduct,
“Students are prohib-
ited from using any type
of electronic device to
record video, take pic-
tures or audio recordings
in restrooms, or any area
that students may be
dressing. In most situa-
tions, this will be treated
as a ‘serious’ infraction.”
In the matter of ques-
tioning students at
school, the Student Code
of Conduct states, in part,
“As school officials, we
have the right to question
your child about his or
her own conduct at
