Dear Editor:
I would like to publicly recognize Splash King-
dom Waterpark for their Splash-out Hunger sum-
mer food drive that benefits Manna, the Van
Zandt County emergency food bank. They of-
fer meal vouchers in exchange for food dona-
tions for Manna, they disregard their conces-
sion income to make sure that there is food on
Manna’s shelves during the summer. They have
done this several years now and it could not
come during a better time of the year.
There are children that eat breakfast and
lunch at school during the school year, and
when summer comes and that program is not
available, it can put a real strain on families,
and on the summer supplies available at
Manna. The usual food drives are in the fall
around the holidays and while that does
immesurable good, it does run out at some point.
Splash Kingdom’s summer drive helps to fill
the shelves for those families in need. Manna is
a community-based organization and received all
of its funding through individuals, companies and
congregations. Manna uses these funds to pur-
chase food from East Texas Food Bank in Tyler.
When food drives are held locally but the pro-
ceeds are taken to East Texas Food Bank, Manna
must purchase those items to bring them back to
Van Zandt County. So, when local food drives
are held and the proceeds go to Manna, you can
be sure that your donations are helping people
directly in our community.
Splash Kingdom will begin their promotion on
July 14 and end on July 19. If you would like to
participate, please bring your donations to
Splash Kingdom or directly to Manna, located
at Grace Bible Fellowship Church, 17897 FM
1255. It is open Monday, Wednesday and Fri-
day 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Some of our constant
needs include breakfast cereal, peanut butter,
canned meats and dried beans. If your gardens
are growing more than your family and friends
can eat, fresh produce is always welcome.
Thank you again to Johnny and Marcie
Blevins, Splash Kingdom and all of the em-
ployees; your efforts are very much appreci-
ated.

Dear Editor:
Now that the most recent elections are over, I
wanted to draw your attention to two recent de-
velopments:
1. The Circuit Court of Appeals threw out
the lawsuit brought by the Duke’s Plaza folks
against the city of Canton. The court declared,
in so many words, that there was no merit to the
suit. Yet, this action was the basis of many ugly
political ads and charges made against the
former mayor. Did I miss any apologies printed
in the paper to this end? No mea culpas?
2. The former mayor paid for an ad to per-
sonally thank everyone who turned out to vote
in the election. I thought it was done with grace.
Because of his ad, I kept my eye out for any-
thing from any of the other candidates to no
avail.
There was a lot of money spent on political
ads and signs for these two elections. Now that
they are over, it will be interesting to see what
the next two years will be like.
In the past, after a spell of ugly ads, name call-
ing and personal attacks, I have been told that
all that stuff is only politics. In the aftermath
of the last mayoral election, there were two years
of stalemate on the city council. With a new
mayor with no voting power under our form of
municipal government, and a shift in balance on
the city council, will there be a peaceful accep-
tance of the election outcome?
I read in the paper that our local radio station
has decided to carry the city council meetings
live. If you cannot attend in person, tune in and
hear for yourself what really goes on in city
council.
Yours,
Ethel M. Sanders
