Early voting for the Place
6 council runoff election ends
Friday, Jan. 13, and that
means Election Day is right
around the corner.
Polls will be open on Elec-
tion Day, Tuesday, Jan. 17,
from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the
Allen Municipal Court build-
ing, 301 Century Parkway.
Candidate Baine Brooks
said he is excited for the com-
ing Election Day and wants to
thank all of his supporters for
helping him get to this point.
“I understand that serving
the public and serving the
people is important,” he said.
“I’m just humbled that I’ve
gotten to this point, and if
we’re the ones who are
elected, we are going to take
the job seriously and go in and
work with the team and listen
to the citizens.”
Candidate Luke
Hollingsworth said he is mak-
ing sure he is doing every-
thing he can to get voters to
the polls and is encouraging
his supporters to do the same
in time for Election Day.
“This is what we’ve been
working for all along, so it’s
just making sure we’re taking
advantage of every second,
every moment and every op-
portunity to speak with some-
one.”
As of closing time Tuesday,
754 voters had come out to
the Allen Municipal Court to

Questions and answers
Candidates field queries at tea party forum
CONNER HAMMETT

Public transportation, fed-
eral and state funding and
the city council’s role in gov-
ernance were among the top-
ics discussed by the two city
council Place 6 runoff candi-
dates at the Jan. 5 Allen Area
Patriots meeting.
Baine Brooks, owner of the
Two Rows restaurant near
U.S. 75 and Bethany, and Luke
Hollingsworth, former public art com-
mittee member and current Boon Ele-
mentary PTA environmental chair,
were each asked same four questions,
posed by a moderator and given to both
candidates ahead of time, for the tea
party group’s city council candidate
forum.
The candidates were first asked to
share what they believe to be the coun-
cil’s role in government as well as what
their responsibilities as council mem-
bers would be if
they were elected.
“I feel that a
council member and
the city council has
to have a good ear,”
Brooks said. “They
must listen to the
citizens. I also think
the city council
members are run-
ning a business for
the citizens and it
takes a team effort. There’s
not one individual council member that
can run that council.”
Brooks went on to drive home his
team-building experience in managing
44 employees at his restaurant, work-
ing as a board member for the North
Texas Food Bank, serving as president
of the Greater Dallas Restaurant Asso-
ciation and working with Mayor Steve
Terrell to draft a bill that was submit-
ted to the Texas Legislature relating to
alcohol laws.
Hollingsworth said the
council should be the voice of
all residents — whether
they’ve lived in the city for
two months or 20 years —
and should spend tax dollars
in a transparent and respon-
sible way. He also said the
council has a responsibility to
maintain an appropriate level
of services that reflects resi-
dents’ expectations.
“We always need to make
sure that we are being held
accountable, that we have checks and
balances, that not just one person or
one group is making all the decisions,”
he said. “We are a public servant. I
want to make sure that I will do every-
thing in my power to make my city bet-
ter, to make Allen a better city both
now and for the future.”
The candidates were then asked if
they support or oppose bringing Dallas
Area Rapid Transit (DART) services

Lovejoy football coach steps down
Interviews for Puckett’s replacement to take place next week
KEVIN HAGELAHD

Lovejoy should get official
word of its move to Class 4A
next month.
But when the Leopards
take the football field at the
next classification, it will be
without the only head coach
the program has known.
Jim Bob Puckett has
stepped down, but will re-
main as the district athletic
director.
“There are so many re-
sponsibilities involved with
being the athletic
director, it became
difficult for me to
watch film or
scout,” Puckett
said. “I feel like I
wasn’t able to give
everything I had to
the football team
and that wasn’t
fair to them.”
Puckett first
contemplated step-
ping down during
the Thanksgiving break and
officially pulled the trigger
Dec. 14. He informed the
school board of his inten-
tions Dec. 13 and
told his players the
Wednesday before
winter break.
“It was heart
wrenching telling
those guys,” Puck-
ett said. “Espe-
cially since so
many of them have
been in the pro-
gram since seventh
grade and we’ve all
grown close.”
The position has drawn
192 applicants.
“I’ve been pouring
through the applications and

we have some quality candi-
dates,” Puckett said. “We
have several head coaches or
assistants that have won
multiple state champi-
onships.”
Puckett said the list of
applicants did not include
former Southlake Carroll
head coach Todd Dodge, who
has been rumored for a num-
ber of positions in the Metro-
plex. It does, however,
include Lovejoy defensive co-
ordinator Billy Thompson,
who coached the team for a
