PERFORMING ARTS
All-State Choir honors told
CROWLEY STAR/KYP SHILLAM
One Crowley High School and eleven North Crowley students were
mey
recognized for their achievement at last Thursday's CISD school board
meeting as they earned All-State Honor Choir distinction.
By KYP SHILLAM

Success breeds success
and in CISD, success is evi-
dent in the choir programs.
NCHS ranked third in
the entire state in number of
5-A All-State Choir members
this year. Only Reagan High
School in San Antonio and
Garland High School quali-
fied more choir members.
Crowley High School
scored alto Annika Burkhardt
into the women’s choir, an
achievement as CHS is a 4-A
school, so Burkhardt was
competing against a larger
pool including 5A schools.
Her teacher is Kendra Fisher.
With eleven participants
selected, NCHS is keeping up
with tradition.
“NCHS is second in the
State in top Mixed Choir stu-
dents this year behind Gar-
land and is in second place
CISD PERFORMING ARTS
in the state behind Reagan
for total number of All-State
members over the past five
years. NCHS has had 81 All-
State Choir members as well
as nine alternates in a 13-year
period,” said NCHS choir di-
rector Robyn Holliman of the
program’s success.
The students, she said,
deserve all the credit.
“They were phenomenal
this year. A student who be-
gins the four-audition pro-
cess in September, with more
than 15,000 choral students
involved statewide, statisti-
cally has a less than a three
percent chance of making an
All-State Choir. Thirty per-
cent of North Crowley stu-
dents who auditioned this
year made it,” said Hollimon.
Hollimon said preparation
for the competition is a mara-
thon and the students have to
fully commit to program.
“We have mandatory sec-
tionals where all the kids in
a voice group come to prac-
tice together, mock audi-
tions with judges who give
critiques and a boot camp
over Christmas break,” she
said. “That’s where we do a
lot of creative thinking and
group critiques. We also do
games to work on sight read-
ing notes and rhythms, which
is 20 percent of their score.”
Most of the seniors list-
ed below will audition this
spring for university music
schools and musical theater
schools in Texas and beyond
to pursue vocal degrees.
Many will receive scholar-
ships in university music/
theater programs.
