By Melissa Graves
Attention Candy Lovers: Archer
County Camp Fire girls and boys will
be participating in the annual candy
sale soon. Camp fire Kids from Archer
City and Holliday may soon be knock-
ing on your door. Delicious Almond
Roco, Almond Caramel Clusters,
Chocolate Covered Mints, Almonds
and Natural Fruit Delights will be
toted around by kids looking for local
candy lovers.
Candy sales begin Friday (tomor-
row) and continue until February 9, so
get your taste buds ready. Buy some
for yourself and buy some for your
Valentine sweetheart and please sup-
port the local Camp Fire girls and
boys.
The candy sale is held to provide
funds for the Camp Fire council and
the individual groups. The sale pro-
vides a positive experience in learning
for the candy sellers. The kids learn
about setting goals, meeting deadlines,
making sales, meeting the public and
managing money. Please help these
local kids in this learning experience-
buy some Camp Fire candy.
Houdashell Runs
For Congress
Ernie Houdashell of Amarillo an-
nounced he will be a candidate in the
March Republican Primary for United
States Congress, 13th District.
Houdashell, 45, cites his nine years
as a Farm Broadaister on KGNC Ra-
dio, his business experience and the
seven years he worked in federal and
state government as the foundation
and reason for his decision.
Houdashell said he is the strongest
Republican candidate in the November
election because the 13th Congression-
al District has become more rural after
redistricting and that is where the
battle will take place. He believes that
he is the candidate with that political
base.
Houdashell also said, his military
experience, which includes two tours
in Vietnam leave?, him with a better
perspective of national defense. Houda-
shell said, "Being a Congressman also
includes being able to make critical
national defense votes if called upon,
like the Gulf War, without having to
take a public opinion poll."
' Houdashell and wife, Sandy, have
been married 21 years and have three
children, Clay, Scott and Michele. He
is a graduate of West Texas State Uni-
versity.
ARMED FORCES
HOMETOWN NEWS
Marine Sgt. David Arredondo, son
of Mary L. Arredondo of Scotland re-
cently reported for duty with Head-
quarters and Support Battalion, Marine
Corps Base, Camp Pendleton, Califor-
nia.
He is a 1983 graduate of Windthorst
High School.
Hudson Announces
Re-election Bid
William L. "Bill" Hudson has an-
nounced his plans to seek reelection to
the State Board of Education in Dis-
trict 14. He stated, "I will focus on
my record since being elected in
1988."
Hudson is a native of Rochester,
who received his Bachelor of Arts in
economics from North Texas State
Univsersity and a Master of Arts in
Government from East Texas State
University. After serving as a special
agent in the Counter Intelligene Corps
during World War II, Hudson chose to
serve the school children of Texas as
coach, elementary principal, athletic
business manager, followed by 20
years as superintendent of schools.
Hudson works with all five of the
Committees of the State Board of Edu-
ation and serves on two of them,
namely the Finance Committee and
the Permanent School Fund Commit-
tee. When asked to outline his objec-
tives for the future, he stated, "I will
continue to work long and hard to
provide the most money possible for
the school districts of Texas and
preserve the Permanent School Fund.
I will strive for academic excellence
with the infusion of vocational pro-
grams. It is my desisre to see the
Texas Education Agency become pri-
marily a resource and help center for
the heart of public education in Texas -
that being teachers, administrators and
school board members.
I have been active in every role of
the State Board of Education, includ-
ing selecting a new commissioner,
formulating school finance, textbook
selection and regulating proprietary
schools. I am very proud that every
vote I cast occurred only after much
study and consultation as to what was
best for the educational process and
without any regard for what was polit-
ically easy."
District 14 covers 56 counties that
lie basically to the north and west of
the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex, in-
cludes 21 percent of the school dis-
tricts of the state, serves 8 of the 20
regional Texas Education Service Cen-
ters and contains an area larger than 25
of the states of the nation.
