Amber Relic Holds
Clues to the Past
A tuft of mammalian hair,
frozen in amber, is probably
from a rodent that lived 30 to 40
million years ago in what is
now the Dominican Republic.
Identified by George Poinar, Jr.,
insect pathologist at the Univer-
sity of California, Berkeley, the
hair sample and associated ecto-
parasites were dug out of the La
Toca mine in the northern moun-
tains of the islands. They are help-
ing to prove that the islands of the
Caribbean have long been in-
habited by a variety of animal
species.

Lead Methodists
In last Texas
Thf Same bishop will be
leading the 275,000 United
Methodists in Blast Texas dur-
ing the next four years.
Bishop Benjamin R. Oliphint,
64, was reassigned last week as
leader of the Houston episcopal
area until Aug. 31, 1992. That
area covers the Texas Annual
Conference.
The action came at the dose
of the July 12-15 South Central
Jurisdictional Conference in
New Orleans. The jurisdic-
tional conference meets every
four years to replace bishops
who have reached mandatory
retirement age or died and to
assign bishops to their geo-
graphic areas of supervision
across the eight-state region
for the next four years.
Three new bishops were
elected during the 1988 juris-
diction conference; Rev. Dan E.
Solomon, 51, of Corpus Christi;
Rev. Bruce P. Blake, 50, of
Winfield, Kan; and Rev. Wil-
liam B. Oden, 52, of Enid, Okla.
In United Methodism, the
office of bishop is an adminis-
trative post, not ah order of
ministry. Bishops provide tem-
poral and spiritual leadership
for the church. They also
appoint all pastors to the
United Methodist congrega-
tions in their episcopal areas
each year.
United Methodist bishops are
elected for life but are required
to retire from active adminsits-
tration by age 70.
Oliphint has supervised the
more than 660 United Metho-
dist congestions of the Texas
Annual Conference since 1984.
He was elected as a bishop in
1980 and previously led the two
United Methodist annual con-
ferences in Kansas. Oliphint is
to retire in 1992.
With 9.7 million members,
the United Methodist Church is
the second largest Protestant
denomination in the United
States. Some 800,000 of those
members live in Texas. That’s
more than in any other state.

Calling Colleen
Dear Colleen;
Two years ago I graduated
from college, and so did my room-
mate (I’ll call her Vicki). I was a
business Major and she decided
to go into teaching. 1 was pretty
lucky and landed a good job right
off the bat, and my salary has
steadily increased. Right now 1
am making about $12,000 more
a year than Vicki. The reason 1
know this is because she is con-
stantly reminding me how under-
paid she is. I agree with her one
hundred percent, but I have no
sympathy for her. She knew when
she entered the field the starting
salaries were low.
The bad part is now she is on
summer vacation and she is razz-
ing me because I have to go to
work every day, while she is loung-
ing around the apartment. There
is no mention of her salary now,
but you can bet the first few weeks
of school will bring her back to
complaining again. How can I
make her understand that although
I agree that teachers are under-
paid, it was her decision to enter
that field?

Lisenby and Lee Manning.

Dear Kim:
You’re in a tough spot. Vicki
has a good problem, and you
don’t have any answers. I also
agree that teachers are grossly
underpaid, and the right steps are
starting lo be taken all across the
country to rectify that situation.
Until then, I’m afraid you’ll
just have to keep on listening to
her, and keep agreeing with
her. But remind her that it is no
fault of yours that you make more
money that she does. And, if
Vicki is so worried about money,
why doesn’t she get a summer job?
Dear Colleen:
What do you think of someone
who times you coming home from
work, going to the store, or visit -
ing a friend? My boyfriend will
call home at the time I should be
there, and if I’m five minutes late
he’ll let the phone ring until I ans-
wer it.
