selected to receive s four-year
Presidential Scholarship to La-
mar University, along with 26
other students from Southeast
Texas. The student is Celia
Hardy, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Thomas Hardy.
The scholarship program of-
fers $1600 during four years to

The program was established
by the Lamar University Alum-
ni Association some years ago,
according to George McLaugh-
lin, vice president for student
affairs, in order to recognize
annually the scholastic, leader-
ship, and service achievements
of outstanding high school
graduates of Southeast Texas
and to attract these superior
students to Lamar University
where they may continue their
intellectual development and
social growth.
The scholarship funding be-
gan as a one-year project in
1973, by the Educational Sub-
Committee of the Beaumont
Chamber of Commerce. The
results were so successful the
Alumni Association of Lamar
University assumed the pro-
gram sponsorship the following
year.
The goal a! the Alumni
Association is to provide 100
scholarships divided equally
among freshman, sophomore,
junior and senior students. This
would permit approximately 26
freshman newcomers each
year, while graduating 26
seniors.
