Kyle Worley has returned
from Japan to pick up the
pieces of his life. After two
years of mission service with
the Mormon Church, he is once
again commuting to Lamar
determined to graduate in May
and enter medical school at the
earliest opportunity.
The hometown boy with the
engaging grin is now a young
man in a hurry to achieve goals.
The fair hair has darkened - the
demeanor grown more sober.
While most young Mormons
arrange their mission service
shortly after high school gradu-
ation, Worley deliberately
postponed his until his twenty-
second birthday. He recalled
too well the acute homesickness
that plagued his first semester
at A&M. The misery forced him
to pack up, return to Silsbee,
and enroll at Lamar. He never
considered denying the call to
the field, but obviously matur-
ity was required.
At the time his application
reached the Mother Church,
the selection process included
an assessment of language apti-
titude. “I’d never even (token
high school Spanish,” Worley
laughs. “My interest in music
left no time for such electives.
When word came I’d qualified
for a foreign assignment, I was
the return flight, it assisted
only with medical emergencies
during the two year period.
Worley made payments from
his own savings and family
contributions to the General
Mission Fund which in turn
issued him wages deemed ade
quate.
In the beginning Worley and
his companions bicycled into
suburban areas making house-
to-house calls. More often than
not no one answered their
knock, for both husbands and
wives worked and children
were involved with school and
specialized tutoring until the
dinner hour. Sometimes a fee-
ble voice from behind closed
doors would utter the Japanese
phrase which translates into
English as “I don’t know any-
thing!”. They’d realize then
that the grandmother was
there alone.
Worley found the attitude
toward the aged a paradox. The
parent is taken into the eldest
son’s home, not assigned to a
public institution, but in the
process becomes a non person.
Indeed the young American
saw good and bad in many
aspects of Japanese life. The
work ethic is extremely strong.
The job literally defines the
man and sets the pattern of his
days, allowing little or no time
for family. At the close of
business he meets constituents

memories of his homecoming,
Worley realizes how much he
has grown. “I learned things
about myself I could not have
discovered any other way,” he
admits. Locked in his mind are
pictures - the teeming streets
of Nagoya during rush hours...
a quiet field on the city's
outskirts where peasant wo-
men planted rice as their an-
cestors had done centuries be-
fore...the Grand Shrines of Ise
where devoid Japanese still
honor ancient Shintu tradi-
tions. Such people and places
will ever be part of him.
A man ot multiple facets,
Kyle worley is not a respected
layman fluent in Japanese, a
talented musician who derives
pleasure from performing, and
a determined student embark-
ing upon a medical career. But
the grin still belongs to the
Silsbee boy who says, “It's sure
groat to be home.!”

better to cook himself than risk
the odd restaurant fare which
played havoc with his digestive
track. He did develop a toler-
ance for some raw fish -
otherwise he cultivated the
polite refusal. ^
When the houae-to-house cal-
ling brought disappointing re-
sults, the senior advisor shifted
the mission team to the streets.
MI had just mastered the trau-
ma of knocking on strange
doors. Now I really had to talk
to myself,” Worley confesses.
I didn't want to be a vulture
plucking victims from the
crowd, I never approached a
woman, knowing my intentions
could be misinterpreted. In
time I learned to pinpoint
someone about my own age. If
he seemed at all interested, I’d
make a date to meet him later
or invite him to services.”
Each member of the team
was expected to make 16 to 28
street contacts per day.
Though they reported regular-
ly to their supervisors, they
were not pressured. Worley's
life assumed a pattern. He
•rooe early - studied till 10:00
when he left for the street. It
was after 9:00 when he return-
ed to the apartment. Sundays
were devoted to worship,
teaching, and discussions with
fellow Mormons.
Although a special bonding
took place among the young
men composing the mission
team, Worley admits he faced
some tough times. He dared
phone home only on rare oc-
casions, fearful the sound of his
mother's voice would rob him of
the will to stay. “Sure I had
qualms about setting my life on
the shelf for two yean. But my
desire to fulfill the call was
strong enough to balance the
sacrifice,” he says. “When I
returned from the street, I
always knew I might have done
better. I kept searching for new
ways to demonstrate the love
and concern my church and my
family have always shown me.”
Now that he is once again
comfortable in a chemistry lab
and has stored away tender
