Whitewright had an
outstanding night of football
last Friday against Tom
Bean (3-5:0-3) not only
because it was their first win.
They played some great ball,
jelled and became an able
football team. Whitewright’s
football future looks bright
indeed. Athletic Director
and Head Football Coach
Wes Rhoten said, “These
kids, our coaches, and this
community needed that win.
We took the kids out to the
practice field right before
kickoff and talked about all
the time, sweat, blood, and
countless hours of work put
in for the most important
48 minutes of their season
so far. The kids responded
and have continued to
come together and work
and that can be considered
UNCOMMON when you
have a trail of losses. It may
sound crazy to say our goal
wasn’t to be district champs,
our first goal was to make
the playoffs one step at a
time and that’s where we
are. We have taken baby
steps and eventually those
baby steps have become
long strides. We are ready
to take strides.”
On the scoreboard the
teams were tied in the first
quarter 6-6, neither scored in
the second, both posted 14 in
the third. After Whitewright
scored 7 in the fourth, Tom
Bean would have had to
cover 90-yards to score
again to tie and it was not to
be. Tiger’s defense held the
Tom Cats and won the game.
Senior Quarterback
Jefferson Ballard had three
touchdowns, 179 rushing
yards, completed five of 11
attempts for 132 passing
yards. Ballard had a 63-yard
run putting the Tigers in
touchdown position where
he scored on the next play
carrying into the end zone
with 52 seconds left in the
third quarter. Junior Austin
Powell had two receptions
for 77 total yards. On a
64-yard pass play in the
4th quarter, Powell posted
the final touchdown of
the game to put the win
on the Tiger’s side of the
board. On the defense,
Phillip Heintze sacked Tom
Bean’s quarterback twice.
Lee Mata had 55 receiving
yards, seven tackles, five
assists; Kelby Shaw had five
tackles, six assists; Powell
had four tackles, four assists
and a blocked kick; Trey
Henderson had three tackles,
five assists and Heintze had
four tackles.
In other District play,
Gunter won over Leonard
19 to 11. Undefeated S & S
Consolidated had a big win
over Bells, 56-14.
The upcoming Bells game
on Friday will be Senior
Night at Tiger Stadium.
Rhoten said, “Bells has
35 kids on varsity and
are young like we are in
a lot of spots. In Week 9,
everyone should expect the
unexpected. Each team is
playing for the win and this
game is unlike any other this
year. It will be a fight and
we again expect the Tigers
to go to battle for each other
and this community.”
