OHS band gives concert
Members of the Olney
High School band pre-
sented their spring concert
on Sunday, April 29. Selec-
tions performed included
UIL contest numbers "A
March from Early Amer-
ica" (Ode to Science) by
William F. Rhodes, "Two
British Folk Songs" by El-
liot Del Borgo and "In the
Winter of 1730" by James
Swearingen.
Other songs included
"Highlights from Les Mis-
erables," arranged by War-
ren Barker; " The Blue and
the Gray" by Clare Grund-
man and "The Magic of
Harry Potter" by John Wil-
liams and arranged by Mi-
chael Story.
Senior clarinetist Brit-
ney Robertson was fea-
tured in a performance of
"Schindler's List" by John
Williams and arranged by
Calvin Custer.
Students were recognized
during the concert for both
their individual and group
achievements during the
year.
Rodney Bennett, direc-
tor of bands, noted the
outstanding successes of
the OHS band, including
recognizing the seven stu-
dents that certified to the
Texas State Solo and En-
semble Contest in May.
Senior band students
Zach Bagley, Laura Gar-
cia, Vivian Garcia, Sarah
Heath, Kelzye Isham, Cay-
leigh Little and Robert-
son were also recognized
for their leadership and
contributions to the OHS
band.
Three students were in-
ducted into the Gallery of
Excellence, including Rob-
ertson, flutist Isham and
percussionist Vivian Gar-
Bennett also announced
that the Olney High School
band was one of only
three bands in Region 2
to receive a Sweepstakes
Award this year, and only
one of 19 throughout the
state.
Other upcoming events
for the OHS band mem-
bers include the annual
Band Banquet on Saturday,
May 11, and drum major
and color guard tryouts,
which will also be held in
May.
Piano
students
to play
in recital
The Key Studio piano re-
cital will be held at 2:30
p.m. Sunday, May 5, at the
Cumberland Presbyterian
Church of Olney. The public
is invited to attend.
Students of Frances Key
who will be performing are
Hannah Taylor, Josh Her-
ring, Keelie Blassingame,
Riley Smith, Zach Bagley,
Tyana Kinney, Andy Rose,
Dionecia Petit, Zarin Fer-
nandes and Leah Shifflett.
Rose, who also studies with
Kayo Watanabe in Wichita
Falls, will perform an organ
number, as well.

McShan leads discussion at Stitchers’ Guild
Marilyn McShan, owner
of Quilt Catering of Bridge-
port, was the guest present-
er at the April 8 meeting of
the Cross Timbers Stitch-
ers' Guild held at the Gra-
ham Senior Citizens Center.
During her presentation,
McShan demonstrated her

Those present at the meet-
ing were Mary Butler, Don-
na Dark, Linda Epperson,

business meeting. Butler
read the minutes from the

financial report. After
discussion, the members
voted to participate in a
"shop hop" on Friday, April
19. Butler, Dark and My-

items.
The next regular meeting
will be May 13 in the home
of Myers, 807 W. Main St.,

annual fish fry on June 1
The Annual Newcastle
Volunteer Fire Department
is hosting an all-you-can-
eat fish fry with all the
trimmings from 6-8 p.m.
Saturday, June 1, at New-
castle City Park.
Chicken strips will be
available for children who
do not wish to have fish.
An auction for a number
of items will be held after
the meal. Cost is $10 for
adults, $5 children 12 and
under and free for children
under 3.
