LETTERS to EDITOR
To the Editor:
We moved to your town
approximately 1-1/2 years ago.
Since then I’ve seen your town
slowly go down not due to its
people but its officials.
Our officials meet during
the night, decide we need a
new city hall, fire department,
post office, even bank (only
ones they can change, as the
others are owned by indivi-
duals).
Can just ONE of them tell
us why? The fire department
is volunteer (no pay); the post
office is • never crowded, in
fact with three employees they
must all lunch at the same
time. The largest crowd at
the city hall has been during
the rabies vaccination for
dogs.
Any town MUST spend
money — the issue here is for
the right things first. I know
it sounds more important to
build buildings but they must
have foundations firsto 1 for
one would like to see decent
streets and sidewalks, as I
don’t want to stumble on crack-
ed sidewalks, break my neck
getting in to pay my taxes for
the new city hall. Sincerely,
/S/M.S.E.
Dear Editor:
I read in the Sept. 25th
issue of your newspaper that
the City of Howe was getting
a new City Hall and a new
Fire Station. You must be
mistaken, 1 am a taxpayer in
this City and I have not been
asked to vote on any such pro-
posal. Please don’t misun-
derstand, I am not criticiz-
ing your newspaper. I just
don’t understand how it could
be built without first being ap-
proved by the taxpayers as it
would have to be paid for with
tax money.
in the first place what oo
we need one for? In the sec-
ond place our taxes are high
enough, and I understand that
property is going to be re-
evaluated in order to raise
taxes as it is. I surely hope
that I am wrong. If so, I
wish someone would enlight-
en me.
We are being bled dry by
the Federal Government to
support everything from un-
wed Mothers on down. It has
got to stop somewhere.
I thank you for your time
and hope I have the oppor-
tunity to hear some other
viewpoints on this subject.

To the Editor:
If you see anyone who wants
a job as Water Superintendent,
Sewer Superintendent, Build-
ing Inspector (including in-
specting plumbing, wiring,
foundations, etc.), Sanitation
Inspector, Road Maintenance-
man and Road Inspector, and
can do these jobs expertly and,
by all means, suits our coun-
cil and mayor, send him to the
Howe city office.
Oh, yeah, the pay, about
$300 per month.
Any takers??
Who’s fooling who? Let’s
get these idiots out of our
city affairs.

erally ‘ran off' the city man-

most people since this was’
anticipated after the city man-
ager stood up for his rights
during a council meeting to
the mayor. After talking to
most of the councilmen, and
hearing a lot of humming and
hawing, they have given two
reasons for this action. They
first said inefficiency. When
asked if they had any specific
reason, one said because
people were finding out what
the council was doing or vot-
ing on. The other said be-
cause the inside of the city
office had not been painted*
The other member said he did
not have any specific reason.
What is the real reason, if
any, behind this? Could it
be a personal grudge because
the city manager wouldn’t go
along... There is a reason
but our councilmen don’t seem
to know what it is. If they
are capable, they might think
a minute. Maybe they have
been prodded into this and
they are ending up the goat,
with the leader accomplish-
ing his political desire. Af-
ter talking to these council-
men, it is very evident that
most just went along for the
ride with someone else doing
the instigating.
What is wrong with the citi-
zens, the taxpayers, knowing
what the council is doing? Af-
ter all, they work for us. Of
course, if something not legal
is happening, you do not want
anyone to know anything about j(
it at all. A lot of people are
wondering why so many coun-
cil meetings are being called
on the spur of the moment (one
at 6:30 a.m., Sept. 29) and so
frequent, and being held in
places other than the city of-
fice. Most times only part
of the council were called to
attend. However, with the
gullible ones now, they are
satisfactory and probably all
would be called. These on-
the -spur -of -the -moment
meetings also conveniently •
eliminate the presence of any
witnesses, visitors, and the
representative of the local
press.
Just before writing this
letter I talked to one of the
newer councilmen for about 30
seconds; that’s all the time it
took, believe me, to find out
what he knew and how much he
admired himself.
The citizens of Howe had
better get interested in what
is going on and get some qual-
ified, capable people to run for
council and mayor. If these
people are going to run our
city, we may have trouble
correcting the damage done
and replacing the money. The
mayor and council are work-
ing for the people of Howe,
us, whether they like it or
not, and don’t let them forget
it.
in the past we have been
able to speak with pride of*
Howe’s city government. We
are going to have to remove the
corruption that is present now
before we can be proud of it
again.

Dear Editor:
Excuse the paper, but I
was so mad ] grabbed the first
thing. Can’t we do some-
thing about the city manager’s
situation? The people up north
can’t walk on the streets at
night and we can’t keep a
decent city manager because
of stupidity on the part of our
elected officials.

Dear Editor:
In addition to the city’s
The Howe Enterprise, Thurs. , Oct. 2, 1969
fiasco this week, we also un-
derstand that the city fathers
can’t get along with the Fire
Department boys. Seems they
don’t like for the fire depart-
ment personnel to use the city
office for their meetings
or the telephone.
Used to be that the city
fathers worked for the people
of the town, that must have
changed llllllllilll
/s/Member of F.D.
Dear Editor:
We need a change: one of
the councilmen told me today.
Sept. 29, that one of the rea-
sons discussed during the Sat-
urday morning meeting of the
council to fire Mr. George, was
that they did not want the pub-
lic to know how much city
money was being spent for
legal fees to try to keep the
pony farm in Howe’s city lim-
its. They said he would tell
anyone who asked. So these
boys have something to hide?
How much has been spent or
is going to be spent on this?
Is it worth it to squander the
taxpayers’ money in this way?
Over $2000 already?
I think we need to have
a meeting to discuss the firing
of the council and mayor.

Dear Editor:
These guys in the city
business can stop all this tur-
moil and hate they have caused
in the city by simply resigning.
I certainly vote for that 11II
