SCHOOL BELLS AGAIN
With the arrival of August, the hottest days of the summer
are upon the land. With this climax of the seasons will come
the month of September — the time for millions of young peo-
ple to return once again to tens of thousands of schoolrooms
across the land.
In today’s world, the sum total of man’s knowledge is ex-
ploding upward at an accelerated pace. It takes many more
years of schooling to become well trained in any field and fur-
ther to become a Well educated human being with the estab-
lished, permanent desire and ability to continue the learning
process throughout life.
The cost of education today demands more and more taxes.
With this in mind, many sometimes. voice the doubt that “all
this schooling is really worth it.’’ They wonder what kind of
a crop of young people we are raising. In the metropolitan ar-
eas, protesters, sit-inners, rioters and school dropouts get a
great deal of publicity, but they are tiny compared to the other
side and would probably be in trouble wherever they were and
whether they had any education or not.
The real promise of the future lies in tha vast majority of
hardworking young people who look forward to school days
again this fall — not only for the social companionship, excite-
ment and fun of activities, but also, because they feel the stim-
ulation of learning about their heritage and opportunities and
exploring the vast fields of knowledge now being unfolded to
man’s mind. As the school bells ring again, we all should wish
them well.
COULD BE TOUGHER
In a recent issue of the Freedom from Hunger.^ magazine,
the comparison is made of what it would be like to live ajs most
of the people of Asia, Africa and Latin America do.
It is pointed out that if we were to be required to live like
the vast majority of these people, we would:
1. Take out the furniture, except for a iew old blankets, a
kitchen table and one chair.
2. Take away all the clothing, except for the oldest dress or
suit for each member of the family, and a shirt or blouse.
3. Dismantle the bathroom, shut off the water, remove the
electrical wiring.
4. Take away the house itself and move the. family into a shed
5. Remove all the other houses in the neighborhood and set
up a shanty-town in its place.
6. Cancel all subscriptions to newspapers, magazines and
book clubs.
7. Give the head of the family three tenant acres to culti-
vate. On this hfe can probably raise $300 in cash crops, of which
one-third will go to the landlord, and ome-tenth for interest.
8. Lop off 25 to 30 years in life expectancy.
Yes, things could be a lot tougher than they are!
