OUTDOORS IN TEXA

the dirt and stop there harm-
lessly.
Usually we will space the
bottles on the top of the mound
10 or 15 bottles to the row, and-
see how fast we can take them
—one after another.
While glass bottles perhaps
provide the greater thrill, met-
al cans last the longest. It
takes quite a collection of both
to provide an hour’s enterain-
ment for four or five shooters.
Youngsters like to collect
these types of targets, espec-
ially if they are going to be
in on the shooting. A little re-
ward money will speed up the
collection too.

Do you enjoy “’hitting the bot-
tle?” Same here!
But we’re not talking about
the indoor pastime of guzzling li-
quor.
We’re talking about that great
outdoor sport of target practice.
It’s worlds of fun to fire a .22
rifle or pistol. It’s even more
thrilling to hit the target dead-
center and see it explode frag-
ments in all directions. t
Of course, you have to go
outside—even out of town to
partake of this pleasure. But

Expands General
Offices In San Angelo
Expanded general offices of
General Telephone Company of
the Southwest and Southwestern
States Telephone Company in
San Angelo will be dedicated
Monday, according to E. H.
Danner, president of the com-
panies.
Employes will have a pre-
view tour of the building the
evening of September 21.
Open house will be held on
Saturday and Sunday afternoons
September 24 and 25.
The 90,000 square foot addi-
tion, plus the original 59,000
square foot building, houses of-
fices for 596 General Telephone
of the Southwest employes and
137 Southwestern States em-
ployes. It also serves as the
‘‘nerve center” for overall op-
erations of both companies.
Cost of the building was ap-
proximately $1,730,000.

Pick a spot where there’s a
high bluff, if possible, or a
steep hillside, or a solid back-
stop of some kind. Don’t
shoot over water or at the wat-
er or where the bullets might at
any time skip aci’oss a pond or
lake. That’s about as danger- ,
ous a stunt as you could pull, j
A second JprtecautJon—don’t j
load the gun until you’re
ready to fire.
And don’t point it at anything
that you don’t want to shoot.
Shooting can be a great plea-
i sure, but it’s no fun to injure
someone through oversight or
carelessness.
So be careful!
Gather up a batch of old non-
returnable beer bottles or cans.
They make excellent targets.
We prefer to build a dirt
mound in front of the back stop-
just dirt , no rocks—so that the
target pieces will collect around
the mound. There they can be
picked up with ease and
disposed of readily.
Note that we said “dirt
mound.” No rocks, or stones or
metallic objects that might de-
flect a bullet and send it
whining over the hilltop and
injure someone.
A good feature of the dirt
mound is that low or wide
shots will imbed themselves in
