Florida nuns market T-shirts with logos of saints
By Bronwen Dachs
Cuthoiic News Service
WASHINGTON—Children’s T-shirts
with popular cartoon characters like'TV’s
Ban Simpson might be all the rage, but
two nuns in Miami Shores, Fla., have
come up with what they hope will be a
popular alternative.
They’re selling shirts with colorful lo-
gos portraying the saints.
Sister Kathryn Hollywood said she and
Sister Lorraine Hale, both Sisters of the
Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary,
had “set out to give kids a chance to
experience the saints as ordinary people.”
"Saints were ordinary people who did
extraordinary things by choosing to serve
others," Sister Hollywood told Catholic
News Service in a telephone interview.
Through the shirts and other merchandise
using logos of saints, the nuns aim to “raise
Catholic consciousness of the saints and to
help raise funds for Catholic schools,” she
said.
Sister Hollywood said that while she
and L'stcr Hale were working on their
doctorates, they had asked teachers at
Catholic schools who they encouraged their
pupils to imitate. Their answer was Jesus,
Mary and the saints, Sister Hollywood
said.
The nuns had then interviewed pupils.
Sister Hollywood said, who told them they
wanted “to be like rock stars and media
people."
“The kids seemed to think saints were
bom holy and were never normal people
like me and you," she said.
“Wc decided then to do something to fill
this gap in the kids’ education,"
Educational books were first on the nuns’
agenda, Sister Hollywood said. She and
Sister Hale did the background resear h on
the saints and commissioned an artist to do
the logos.
“Once the saints' logos were made we
decided to put them on T-shirts,” Sister
Hollywood said.
“The saints have withstood the test of
time,” she said. “Wc didn’t sec why kids
always had to wear T-shirts with cartoon
characters on.”
Sister Hollywood said comparing the
logos of saints to those of television char-
acter Bart Simpson “is like comparing
apples and oranges, they are so different.’’
“The saints were real flesh and blood,"
she said.
The nuns have developed a saints-’ "work-
book for middle-grade youngsters, saints’
greeting cards, and arc offering merchan-
dise decorated with 25 saints, including
Mary, S t.Peter, St. Patrick,and St. Francis
of Assisi.
In addition to likenesses of the saints
and stories about their lives, the work-
book, intended for use in religious educa-
tion programs, contains games, quizzes
and puzzles. The book is called “The Heroes
and Heroines of the Christian Story."
The saint line of merchandise is being
offered by a New York based firm, Alle-
giance Advantage. It will be sold in schools
and parishes.
Sister Hollywood said that she and Sis-
ter Hale liked the name Allegiance Advan -
tage as it “shows people that wc’rc all
trying to promote hops and values in to-
day’s young people.”
She said the response front people in-
volved in Catholic education to the mer-
chandise has been “fabulous and excit-
ing.”
-Teacher's Prayer-
Heavenly Father, send me Your Word when I teach,
testing my thoughts and ideas by Your truth.
Give me strong convictions, Lord, but teach me not
to be overbearing in the way I express them, and help me to learn from
those I teach.
Help me to relate the gospel to everyday matters, so it will come alive, the
Word from God today.
Lord, when my class does not seem to be paying attention and when I feel I
have failed, help me not to become too
discouraged and remind me that the Holy Spirit
is the real Teacher.
Holy Spirit, take my words and use them for the teaching and healing
of all people.
Ail-knowing God, give me the mind of Christ, give me the heart of Christ,
Fulfill your plan for all who teach and all who learn. We give back to You for
Your use the time and talents You have given us. To You be the glory. Amen.

'Jesus Began to address the chief priests and dders of
tfu people, once more using parables. Wie reign of fort
may be likened to a king who gave a wedding Banquet
for his son. 9fe dispatched his servants to summon the
invited guests to the wedding, But they refused to
come. dhe king then said to the servants: '‘The Banquet
is ready, But those u>fw were invited were unfit to
come. ,(Ihc servants' then went out to the Byroads and
minded up everyone they met, Bad as wed as good.
This filled the wedding hall with banqueters."
