CORPUS CHRISTI—God fashions each
of us just as a potter molds his clay. As His
vessels, wc assume different shapes but
are created for the same purpose—to serve
Him and His kingdom. Wc serve Him
according to the vocation He has called us
to and fashioned us for.
Recently the associate directors of the
diocesan Office of Vocations, Sister Luz
Done?, and Father Frank Martinez, shared
their experiences of answering God’s call.
me. I had a desire to serve Him and give
my life to Him. 1 could see (from watching
the Sisters) that it was fun being a Sister
and it was something I would enjoy doing,”
she said.
She added she received support and en-
couragement from her parents but not her
brothers. “They said it was too hard and
thatl wasn’t ready.”
After only finishing the eighth grade,
Sister Donez also thought perhaps she
wasn’t ready. “I felt like Jeremiah in the
Old Testament, who was called by God as
a teenager.”
She said, like Jeremiah, she would pray
and call out to God, “‘I don’t know how to
speak, I’m too young.’ But, 1 allowed God
to work in me.”
Since she was allowed to enter the Mount
Tabor Convent in Calallen at an age when
most are denied, Sister Doric/, felt it was a
sign that she was following the right path.

Sister Dofiez and Father Martinez ac-
knowledged there is a premise many of us
overlook: God calls each person to a voca-
tion and wc m ust be open to hear this cal 1.
Both attributed their openness to the Chris-
tian witness of those around them.
Growing up in Harlingen, Sister Donez
said she wasalways impressed by the work
of the Missionary Sisters of Jesus, Mary
and Joseph.

“What attracted me (to this congrega-
tion) was the fact that they dedicated their
lives to works of mercy...working with the
poor. I felt 1 was in touch with this charism.”
She professed her vows in the early
1960s and worked in parish ministry for
several years, eventually going to work at
the Corpus Christi Minor Seminary.
In 1983 Sister Donez was appointed to
the Vocation Office, where she is cur-
rently in charge of the vocation awareness
program. She also interviews women who
are discerning a vocation.
