Czechfest ‘90
Czcchfcsi ’90 will be held Saturday and Sunday. Octo-
ber 13-14 at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, four miles
past Five Points on Hwy. 624. There will be a two-day
rodeo, a carnival, games, food, refreshments and an au-
thentic Czech dinner served Sunday at 11 a.m. There will
be a dance Saturday from 8 p.m. to midnight. For more

Spohn events
On Tuesday, Oct. 16 at Spohn Hospital, Corpus Christi
and Thursday, Oct. 18 at Spohn Kleberg Hospital, Kingsville,
Dr. Teodoro Saich, plastic surgeon will present an infor-
mative discussion of breast surgery, including such topics
as advantages, risks, methods of breast augmentation, re-
duction and reconstruction. Admission is free, but regis-

The emergency room of Spohn Hospital in Corpus
Christi is holding a “teddy bcar”ciinie at the Padre Staples
Mall Community Fair, Oct. 12 and 13. Children arc
encouraged to bring their hurl or injured teddy bears and
stuffed animals to the clinic. Members of the Spohn
Emergency Room team will get them on the road to recov-
ery as well as answering questions about an emergency
room. People may also sign up for CPR courses to be held
at the hospital.
Mended Hearts, a support group for heart patients and
their families, sponsored by Spohn Hospital, will meet on
Oct. 15, ai6p.m. in the Magnolia Room. No registration

Catholic Evangelization ‘90
Catholic Evangelization ’90, national training day for
evangelization, will present Evangeliz.ation and the Fam-
ily, Saturday, Oct. 20 from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the
Pastoral Center Gym in Corpus Christi and the Pastoral
Center in Laredo. Please bring a sack lunch. This program
is intended for clergy, religious and laity.

Fall Festival
St. James Church, Driscoll, will celebrate itsannual Fall
Festival Saturday, Oct. 13 from 12noonuntil9p.m.There
will be games for all ages, food and live music. The public
is invited to attend.
South Texas Opry
Driscoll Foundation Children’s Hospital (DFCH) will
present the South Texas Opry, Thursday, Oct. 18, from
7:30-10 p.m. in the Driscoll Auditorium, 3533 S. Alameda,
Cotpus Christi. The doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and a S4
donation provides an evening of wholesome, down-home
country entertainment featuring fiddlers and other musi-
cians, singers and comedians. The event is a monthly
fundraiser sponsored by the Southsidc Rotary Club of
Corpus Christi and a committee of volunteers. For more

Oktoberfest
Clinical pastoral education
An extended unit of Clin.cal Pastoral Education will be
offered at Memorial Medical Center beginning in mid-
October for clergy and laity. The program provides con-
tinuing education in pastoral care. It is accredited hy the
Association for Clinical Pastoral Education and seminary
credit may be received. For more information, call Chap-

Beef barbecue
Sl. Anthony's Church in Violet, will have »Ls 38th
Annual Beef Barbecue on Sunday, Oct. 21. Serving will
begin at 1! a.m. and last until 2 p.m. Donation is S4.50 per
plate and includes drink and dessert. Holy Mass is at 9:30
a.m. Ther will be entertainment throughout the day. The
Violet Museum will be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Vocation Awareness Week
Sacred Heart Church, Three Rivers, will hold its annual
Oktoberfest, Sunday, Oct. 14, in the school cafeteria.
There will be a barbecue dinner with all the trimmings,
served from 11 a.m. Plates are S4.50; beef by the pound
will be sold for S6 per pound. There will be games, a
country store, plant sale, an auction, raffle prizes, and
much more.
Turkey dinner
The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 364 will serve
their second annual Turkey Dinner with all the trimmings,
Sunday, Nov. 4 from 1 ] am. to 2 p.m. at the Post Home,
5323 Kostoryz, Corpus Christi. Plates arc $4 each, pro-
ceeds will be used to assist needy veterans and their
families in the coastal bend. For more information, call

Concert
The Diocese of Corpus Christi will present the David
Kauffman Band “Who’s Calling Me?”Tour to be held at
the Corpus Christi Pastoral Center O’Connor Hall (Gym)
Saturday, Oct. 27 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets may be purchased
for S6 pre-sale at Office of Youlh/Adult Ministry, 1200
Lantana: Abel’s Music Store, MeArdlc at Kostoryz: Golden

Friends of the Cathedral
There is still time to purchase a commemorative tile
before the Corpus Christi Cathedral’s gala anniversary
celebration, scheduled for Oct. 26-28. All those who have
purchased tiles will be guests at a special Friends of the
Cathedral preview party, from 7-9 p.in.. Friday, Oct. 26. If
you wish to participate in this fundraising project, contact

Mission of Renewal
Father Frank Fidgeon, CSSR will conduct a Parish
Mission of Renewal at St. Peter’s Parish, 390! Violet Rd.
in Annaville. Father Fidgeon will preach at all weekend
Masses Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 13 & 14. The Mission
begins Oct. 15. Morning Mass is Monday-Thursday at 6
and 8 a.m. Mission sermonsand prayers at 7 p.m. Monday-
Thursday. Reconciliation is Wednesday at 8 p.m.
Days of recollection
For young men who are seniors in high school, college
students and older, who are discerning their vocation and
may have some interest in religious life and/or the priest-
hood, Days of Recollection will take place on one Satur-
day a month, Oct. 13, Nov. 17 and Dec. 8 from 10a.m.-5
p.m., at St. John V ianney House of Studies, Campus of the

Corpus Christi A1 liance for the Mentally 111 meets on the
third Tuesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. at Humana
Hospital, 3315 S. Alameda St., Corpus Christi. Myths
about mental illness will be the topic for discussion.

Sign language classes
The Knights of Columbus Catholic Deaf Community
Program in Laredo, is sponsoring classes for learning sign
language at the Laredo Pastoral Center, 1901 Corpus
Christi Street, Laredo. The classes are free. For more

Spiritual life retreat
"Bom for Joy,” the second in a series of Texas Gulf
Coast spiritual life retreats will be held Oet. 12-14. The
weekend will be headquartered at Beachhead Resort, Port
Aransas. The speaker will be Iris Pearce, Dean of the
Schools of Christian Spirituality and a faculty member of
the School of Spiritual Direction for the Episcopal Dio-
cese of Dallas, who has held many Catholic retreats. The
talks will focus on: Developing Christian Identity Through
Intimacy with God; Finding True Intimacy with Yourself
and Others and Cultivating Intimacy Through Prayer and
Meditation. The retreats arc organized and hosted by
Charles and Jennifer Weir Garrett of Corpus Christi. They
are both lifelong Episcopalians and arc both Cursillistas.
The fee for the retreat, both days including meals is SI 65.
