County court jury
convicts DWI offender
William Harvey Coffee of Ar-
cher County, Texas was found
guilty and convicted of Driving
While Intoxicated by an Archer
County jury on Wednesday, Sep-
tember 3rd.
Coffee was originally arrested
on August 5th, 2006 by Depart-
ment of Public Safety Tooper
Gina Loran near Hwy 1954 at
1:00 a.m. in the morning.
The State was represented by
County Attorney R.B. Morris
and the trial was presided over
by County Judge, Gary
Beesinger. After the Jury had
returned the Guilty verdict,
Beesinger assessed Coffee's
punishment at a $1,000.00 fine,
$362.00 Court Costs, $750.00
in Attorney's fees and 90 days in
the County jail. In addition,
Beesinger required Coffee to
complete a DWI Education Pro-
gram and a Victim Impact Panel
Program.
Coffee's 90 day jail sentence
was suspended due to being
placed on Community Supervi-
sion/Probation for one year, but
he would be required to serve
the sentence if he fails to com-
plete Probation successfully.
Coffee will also be required to
pay a $ 1,000.00 surcharge to the
Department of Public Safety for
three years or face additional
license suspension if he fails to
do so.
3rd Annual Sarah’s Cure
Benefit coming in October
Mark and Jo Beth Southard
both grew up in Archer County.
Now living in Decatur, Texas,
with a family of their own, they
find themselves in the fight of
their lives: helping to find a cure
for the incurable disease that
plagues their daughter.
Nine-year-old Sarah Jo was
diagnosed with Classical Galac-
tosemia seven days after birth.
Galactosemia is often confused
as a mil allergy or intolerance,
when indeed it is a life-long ge-
netic disorder that affects only
one in 80,000. Some of the pos-
sible side effects are enlarged
liver, kidney failure, cataracts
and brain damage.
Sarah is missing the enzyme
that breaks down the carbohy-
drates lactose and galactose. Lac-
tose and galactose are found in
many foods including some
fruits, vegetables, meats, almost
all processed foods, and many
children’s medications.
Currently there is no cure for
Galactosemia. The only thing the
Southard’s can do is try to elimi-
nate the toxins from Sarah’s diet.
Even with a restricted diet, chil-
dren still experience speech and
language problems, fine and
Frankie Valens to appear
at Royal this weekend
Frankie Valens, the pop
singing legend of the 60's and
70's will appear in person at the
Royal Theater this weekend,
Sunday, September 14, 2008 at
7:00 p.m. Also appearing with
Valens will be his spouse,
Phyliss, who is a concert pianist.
Valens' show will contain
many of the hits that have made
it to number one on the charts, to
include: This Magic Moment;
Summertime Blues; The Lion
Sleeps Tonight; Pretty Woman;
My Girl; Sixteen Candles;
Rockin 'Robin; Happy Together;
Unchained Melody; Smoke Gets
In Your Eyes; Hello Mary Lou;
Donna; Only You; Johhny Be
Goode; and At The Hop.
In 1967, while living in New
Jersey and working in
accounting at a local firm as
well as working part-time in a
sporting goods department store,
Valens met a man who gave him
an audition with the band he was
managing. The band, Eminent
Domain, had been looking for a
new lead-singer, and as they say,
"The rest is history!"
Valens' popularity began to
rise; and the band was in demand
in nightclubs around the United
States and Canada. During this
time, Valens cut several records.
In 1965, he did a remake of This
Magic Moment, originally
recorded by The Drifters, which
became his signature song, and
then, in 1969, he re-recorded
Smoke Gets In Your Eyes, a
Platters original. His last
recording was She Cried.
While with his band in Las
Vegas, Valens felt that he was
missing something in his life
and was growing tired of the
rock and roll life style. Then in
1971, after a disagreement with
his agent, Valens' life began a
downward spiral. After firing
his agent, his records were pulled
from the radio stations, and he
found no work, and to this day,
receives no royalties for his
records. By 1972, the Frankie
Valens era had come to an end
except for two small roles in the
movies, Ice Castles and Every
Which Way But Loose.
After a broken marriage and a
broken career, he returned to his
former life as an accountant and
started attending a small church.
It was there that he met his
current wife who was Minister
of Music, and then that he gave
his life to Christ. After several
years in the ministry, Valens
and his wife have returned to
touring, and are now appearing
across the country in concert
with a mix of the old time pop
and rock and roll favorites, and
gospel combined with some
show stopping piano tunes from
his concert pianist wife.
Valens has appeared on stage
with Crystal Gayle, President
Ronald Reagan, The Byrds, The
Platters and The Box Tops.
Come see Frankie Valens this
Sunday night, September 14th,
7:00 pm for some good fun, great
music, and wonderful memories.
Tickets will be available at the
door only for $ 15. All seats will
be general admission, and do
not need to be reserved.
Homecoming Golf Scramble set for

gross motor skills, development
delays, specific learning dis-
abilities and premature ovarian
failure.
Classical Galactosemia is con-
sidered an “Orphaned Disease”,
which means that very little
money is put into medical re-
search to fine a treatment or
cure. This certainly is very dis-
heartening and scary for the par-
ents of children with this disor-
der which affects the Southard’s

Skateboarders
banned from
Courthouse
properties
Effective immediately, by Or-
der of the Commissioner's Comt,
all skateboards, roller blades or
bicycles have been banned from
the Archer County Courthouse
and Courthouse Annex proper-
ties.
Gary Beesinger, County
Judge, stated that skateboarders
were damaging the steps, prop-
erty and sidewalks on both the
Courthouse and Annex which
created problems since the
Courthouse is designated as a
historically renovated Court-
house, funded with State mon-
ies. In addition, Beesinger also
noted that the risk of injury to a
skateboarder created liability
issues and concerns that neces-
sitated the action.
For additional information or
questions, please call the office
of the County Judge at (940)
574-4811.
